El Niño, the phenomenon that changes global winds, began in late July of 2023. This occurrence will negatively impact ocean productivity in the Pacific Ocean and bring abnormal weather conditions, specifically to East Asia and the Western Americas. Ultimately, citizens can expect to see weather changes as the El Niño season endures.

Students woke up to the sound of thunder this morning, immediately followed by flash flood warnings. The rain continues to pelt the ground and leave the world looking like a macabre painting. The forecast shows that the storms shall pass by tomorrow morning.

A massive fire rages over the Omeo region of Australia, with CNN reporting that “three fires have form[ed] a...blaze bigger than...Manhattan.” The wildfires in Australia started early September with small fires spreading across New South Wales before spreading to the greater Sydney region. With the effects of climate change ever-present in Australia and a massive drought only adding to the problem, it seems like these flames will not fan out any time soon.

As the semester comes to a long awaited close, the cold winter breeze drags in freezing rain and low temperatures. Students feel the dreary effects as they walk through the halls, slowly turning gloomier everyday. “I can’t wait for this semester to end. As soon as it ends, it’s Christmas time,” Magnet sophomore Lawrence Kilmani said.

Outside NC, the sky sits in a grey, sallow state. This Friday marks the 5th day in a row that the weather remained in gloomy, with the constant downpour of rain serving as another marker of consistency; it seems like the trend will continue on for at least one more day, as weather predictions list a 100 percent chance of precipitation for Sunday. This gloomy atmosphere seems like it found a way within the school walls, as the often colorful school halls now look far less lively.

Blown away by the chilly autumnal wind, students struggle to get out of their warm beds and arrive on time to class with the pouring rain. Bracing themselves with rain jackets, boots, and umbrellas, students try not to slip in the halls or catch a cold before Thanksgiving Break.

Soaking up the sun and the first day back from break, NC students share stories about their fun-filled February vacations while enjoying the breezy weather in the courtyard. While most students stayed in state for the break, some road tripped to bordering states or flew across the country to visit friends and family. With the end of the year in sight, students used this break to rest and recharge to make sure they head into the last stretch of the school year strong.
