Dylan

NC sophomore Dylan Abbott first started to think about how uncomfortable he was with his identity in eighth grade. With his body experiencing changes that he could not control, he became uncomfortable and wanted to change what he saw. Dylan played on an all girls soccer team, where he felt disconnected and out of place.
“Sometimes, I would get mistaken as a boy, even though I wasn’t trying to appear as one. It felt strange, but rewarding in a sense,” Dylan said.
After figuring out why he felt so uncomfortable with the changes with his body and playing on an all girls soccer team, Dylan realized he identified as transgender.
Dylan left his identity in the dark until July of 2017, when he first came out to friends in Marching Band. Although he always accepted himself, others’ reassurance made him feel much more comfortable. Having the support of the people who he cared about made him feel proud.
“Once Dylan gets comfortable around someone, he gets affectionate and is more carefree,” Dylan’s friend, junior Lucas Magalhaes, said.
