The cupcake display immediately makes the store an inviting place to be. Some of the flavors vary seasonally, and some stay constant all-year long.

On October 3, 2013, the Kennesaw/Acworth community welcomed a new source of baked treats: Bert and Boo’s Bake Shop, run by a local wife and mother of two.

From the outside, the building looks miniature, yet quaint, and a cute sign broadcasts the words “Life is short… eat dessert first!” Once you walk in, the indescribable smell of a fresh batch of cookies overwhelms customers, and the display cases look dangerously appealing.

The property looks several decades old, established and worn; customers may recognize it as the former headquarters of approximately 20 other businesses throughout the years, but hopefully this quaint bakery will have staying power.

“It used to be many things: a barber shop, a law office, a church. We really took the building down to the studs and opened it all up,” the owner commented.

The shop’s best sellers include the midnight snack cookie, which contains Snickers and potato chips, the salted caramel cookie, the wedding cake cupcake, and the Oreo cupcake.

Not wanting to miss out, I purchased a salted caramel cookie, a midnight snack cookie, a white chocolate pretzel cookie, and a chocolate peanut butter cupcake.

Biting into the salted caramel cookie fills your mouth with a gooey, salty-sweet goodness. The cookie, though heavy in texture, is a perfect mix of salt and sweet caramel. Anyone who enjoys the taste of salted caramel, a trending flavor, will enjoy this indulgence.

The concept of the midnight snack cookie excited me the most, and it didn’t fail to deliver. The salt is overwhelming if you’re not a salty-sweet lover, but the crunch of the potato chips and the sweetness of the Snickers makes up for it, earning the cookie a space in my all-time favorites list.

The white chocolate pretzel cookie incorporates a different kind of chocolate than the others which keeps you interested, but the cookie needs more crunch. If offered, I would not hesitate to say no to this sweet treat, but not necessarily go out of my way to buy it.

A Reese’s peanut butter cup embellishes the chocolate peanut butter cupcake, and a surprise peanut butter cup in the batter lends to the cupcakes molten-like insides. The cake itself remains dense, but the taste is exquisite.

Another plus of the bakery? A few cookies or cupcakes won’t break the bank. The four cookies and one cupcake I bought cost only $4.88.

For the price and the quality of the sweets, I would stop back in anytime. Bert and Boo’s Bake Shop is a local treasure we should all take advantage of.

The cookies I ordered and tried included two salted caramels, one midnight snack, and one white chocolate pretzel. They came packaged in a pastry box and smelled amazing.
