For one significant junior standout middle infielder, pitcher and utility player, Leah Byrd (9), the game of softball acts as a lifestyle. Byrd’s unmatched skill and energy on the field sets her apart from other players, which contributes to her numerous recognitions. With a positive attitude, Byrd acts as a role model for all of her teammates, enhancing the team’s performance by shining like a star.
“Leah Byrd is hard-working and a pure talent. She loves the game and has so much passion for it. She is currently committed to Auburn, which we are all extremely proud of her for. We all wonder how she keeps her high Grade Point Average (GPA) while being an all-star on the field,” freshman teammate Addie O’Neal (16) said.
Softball has played a significant role in Byrd’s life since the age of eight. Inspired by her mother, who also played softball, Byrd and her sister felt encouraged to try the sport. This initial introduction quickly turned into a passion, driving her towards the ultimate honor of signing to a Division 1 (D1) college. Her goals drive her to play to the finest of her ability, allowing her to lead her team through the toughest of games. She constantly holds herself to the highest standard, pushing to refine her skills. The mindset of continuously challenging herself has allowed her to thrive both on and off the field, fostering a determination that carries into all aspects of her life.
This upcoming season proves particularly special because the season acts as her last round at NC. With her final opportunity to play for NC, she hopes to leave a lasting impact. Her goal remains to finish the season on a high note, ensuring everything runs smoothly while also creating lasting memories. She enjoys the experience and creates memories that will stay with her long after her time at NC comes to an end.
“My favorite part of softball is definitely the people I met along the way. I’ve surrounded myself with the best community, and it’s kind of like we are all one big family, always looking out for each other. I have a very strong connection with my team and I think that a strong connection and building that team chemistry is a really important factor in team prosperity,” Byrd said.
On the field, she takes on the roles of a middle infielder and a pitcher, proudly wearing the number nine. Byrd’s strong connection with her team remains a factor of softball she deeply values, as she believes that building chemistry among players acts as a crucial role in a team’s overall success. She understands that trust and unity prove essential factors in achieving prosperity as a team.
Beyond softball, she aspires to pursue a career in the medical field, either as a nurse practitioner or a pediatric physical therapist. While she embraces goals beyond the sport, she does not feel ready to leave softball behind. As a junior, she committed to playing at the collegiate level and will be continuing her athletic career at Auburn University. With great enthusiasm, she embraces the next chapter in her life.
The Chant wishes Byrd luck on her journey.
