Creativity and school spirit mix in art club as they begin constructing a mural for the school.

Talented and passionate art club members started painting an elaborate mural at the Kennesaw Public Library on April 25.

“Well, I think it was a worthwhile opportunity. Art is important and being able to involve many different members of the community in it is really important and valuable,” junior and art club president Krystal Washington said.

Meeting on Mondays after school, NC’s art club strives to find different outlets for self-expression. They often volunteer in the community, using their creativity and generosity to help others. Painting at the local Kennesaw library represents their latest community service event.

“It was a lot of fun, and I really enjoy art. Even though I personally don’t want to go into a career with art, I know how much it can contribute to the community,” junior and vice president Annette Montero said.

Though the art club includes about 13 members, only six dedicated students volunteered to help paint the mural. Leaving directly after school, the students arrived at the library and received materials and inspiration for their project. “Fizz, boom, read” represents the library’s summer reading slogan, so the mural incorporates many exciting scientific concepts. By looking through pictures of robots, scientists, and beakers, each member collaborated to generate ideas for a science and reading-themed masterpiece.

“I think this will be really cool. [The mural] will be right in the kids’ reading section, right next to the little reading tables. It’ll be a really great addition to the library,” senior Graciela Vera said.

The art club will continue working on the painting until summer begins. Once school ends, the final mural will debut to all library patrons.
