Varsity football once again watched in agony as an 11-point fourth quarter lead relinquished from their grasp in front of a packed home crowd on Friday night as NC fell to North Gwinnett, 29-28.

Bulldogs linebacker Matthew Andryusky returned a blocked field goal 75 yards to give the Bulldogs the lead with 5:30 to go. The Warriors drove down the field on the ensuing possession, only to mishandle the snap on the potential game-winning field goal attempt to leave Warrior nation in desolation and shock for the second consecutive week.

“Our team is being tested right now,” Coach Queen said following the game. “The kids deserve better because they’ve worked so hard.”

NC appeared ready to avenge last week’s blunder as they built a lead in the third quarter, capitalizing off Bulldog special teams errors. One play after a North Gwinnett muffed punt, junior quarterback Will Lovett connected with junior wide receiver Drew Tejchman for a 37-yard touchdown strike to give the Warriors a six-point lead. A high snap on a punt later in the quarter provided NC good field position and lead to a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Manny Pelzer to boost the Warriors to a 28-17 lead.

Lovett finished the game with 240 yards and one touchdown passing, and added two more touchdowns on the ground from 13 and one yard out, both coming in the first half.

“We’re a family and we just need to stay positive, pick our boys up, and get ready for next Friday,” junior linebacker Chandler Wooten said.

NC travels to Cartersville next week to face class AAAA’s second ranked Purple Hurricanes.
