The Mindy Project premiered on Hulu this September after originally being cancelled on Fox. The humor of the show remains constant throughout the new season and leaves off with a cliffhanger.

The Mindy Project returned on Hulu for its fourth season after cancellation from FOX following last season’s finale. Fans of the show remained unaware of the show’s revival until August and the new season premiered September 15. Although concerns arose about a change in feel resulting from the switch, The Mindy Project remains constant in delivery and proves powerful in modern day TV’s lineup.

The Mindy Project’s returning characters keep the same comedic style as they previously employed on Fox. Mindy’s clueless pop culture references remain a substantial aspect of the show’s appeal, while Morgan’s airhead jokes keep the show moving. All past relationships transfer and no awkwardness rises in the episodes.

The new season starts making an impact from the first episode. The show introduces new characters at a rate that does not overwhelm old viewers, but still allows newer fans to not feel like invaders of a well established show. The episodes do not go into background detail, but make it possible for new viewers to understand the show and its characters.

The writers flawlessly introduce a new storyline: the birth of Mindy and Danny’s son, Leo. The new addition to their new family proves a difficulty for Mindy as a working mother. Exploration of in real life situations stands as a difference from previous seasons. Mindy’s decisions regarding her family reflect the difficulty that many working women must experience.

As the season progresses, the show offers more humor than previous seasons. Characters grow and tackle harder issues, such as Danny finding out about his other child and his dad’s heart attack all in the same episode. Mindy and Danny’s arguments over her quitting her job allows for the show to offer seriousness while tackling common issues faced by many. This discussion comes up in many episodes and stands out as the main issue in the mid-season finale, going back in time to when Mindy and Danny first met. Their mutual dislike of one another eventually turns to friendship and helps to convince Mindy what step to take next in their relationship.

Although the finale left some fans confused, the writer’s ability to add humor to serious situations helps The Mindy Project stand out from other network comedies. When the next half of the season returns, viewers will see how Mindy and Danny’s relationship ends up. With all on the line, fans of the show will want to stay tuned.
