NC’s annual Winter guard tryouts took place at Barber Middle School on Monday, November 14th. Open to all students, the audition process lasted a strenuous three hours, requiring those who audition to show proper flag skills as well as dance techniques.

“The tryouts were really fun because it was a bonding experience, and we got to work and improve on our skills,” freshman Ketzel Greve said.

A Broadway-style audition process decided who will make it onto the team. Instead of students receiving a harsh invitation to leave like a normal audition, the Winter guard instructor decided to choose his team based on effort shown by auditionees.

“It was exciting and emotional; I think everybody did well, and it excited me for the winter season,” sophomore Lily Payton said.

The audition began with simple stretches and practice of flag basics. The instructor taught a short dance routine and a small piece of flag work to examine who could pick it up quickly and perform it well. Students practiced a few tosses, ranging from easy to hard.

The night ended with students practicing a routine taught twice, then conducting a group meeting.

“Guard is something I’ve always been passionate about, but there’s something about Winter guard that gives you a sense of unity as a group, and I love it,” sophomore Jamayla Kadima said.
