The NC HoPe club represented the Hispanic community with several members volunteering at McCall Primary’s Read Across America literacy night to read to young learners. The night consisted of fun reads and exciting activities with K-2 graders to kick off National Reading Month. HoPe members engaged in literacy games and read thrilling books to keep vivid imaginations alive in young readers.

Lurking below the publicity of NC athletics, senior Sofia Brisbane quietly dominates Georgia high school riflery. Her unmatched focus and character have molded her from a curious middle schooler to one of the fiercest shooters in the country. Raking in accolades, Brisbane has spent the last four years on the rifle team sweeping through state and national competitions and proceeds en route to yet another shot at a state title.

A child’s world typically contains fairy tales and far-away lands, glued together with imagination. Fortunately for the young believers and magic, North Cobb Art teacher Natalie DePietro’s Applied Design students turned fantasy into reality. After receiving drawings from Vaughan Elementary School’s fourth-grade class, DePietros students worked diligently to create 3D plush toys that resembled the sketches.

Although NC holds a reputation for its appropriately renowned International Studies Magnet Program, it equally deserves praise for its successful encouragement of the field of science, predominantly through the women and girls that engender that passion. Both in and out of school, the ladies of NC showcase the cruciality of female voices in science. With club meetings, lesson plans or summer programs, NC women help fan the flame of the importance of female voices in this diverse field.

As February 1 marks the start of Black History Month, people worldwide recognize Black history and their remarkable achievements, mainly in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. During February, people support Black businesses, visit historical African American sites, learn about prominent Black figures and read Black literature. While people continue to spread awareness about Black history, the efforts of strong Black individuals still linger today, most of which contribute to our everyday lives. In honor of Black History Month, The Chant has composed an article on several inventions made or improved by creative Black innovators.

At the Brain Station, students can read, meet with a tutor, catch up with friends over coffee and work on homework. Through his work in marching band, theater and independent hobbies, senior Joseph Pagan-Portes embodies musical versatility at NC. Known for his role as Miss. Agatha Trunchbull in NC’s production of “Matilda The Musical Jr,” Pagan-Portes works to build community, develop leadership and spread laughter any and everywhere. Nonetheless, underclassmen and teachers will need to wave goodbye to Pagan-Portes’ various characters and voices as he concludes his last semester at NC.

January 22, NC’s newest club, Sending Sunshine, held its first meeting of the school year. Equally fueled by altruism and creativity, the club members designed cards and letters for senior citizens in local retirement homes to help cure potential feelings of isolation or loneliness. Co-presidents Katherina Sackey and Jordyn Walker aim to further encourage community service in NC’s halls, one colored pencil or scented marker at a time.

The NC Standing Ovation welcomes audiences to their weekend of performances of “The Spongebob Musical: Youth Edition” January 25, 26 and 27 across four shows. The vivid cast showcases their months of diligence to friends, family and peers looking to see a quick, comical musical. Colorful costumes paired with amusing songs and characters make this musical worthwhile.
