Fashion Club makes its debut to become a part of the NC club scene. Through its new beginnings, the club already plans innovative ideas to instill itself in the school community. Created by club president senior Ryan Brown, Fashion Club fosters an environment where students can convene to discuss their chic interests and a place to pursue their career paths. Through addressing topics of the fashion industry and inspiration from other NC clubs, the Fashion Club’s new mission focuses on creating a fashion show to shine a light on a growing issue in the creative industry: sustainability.

As diffusion and globalization occur worldwide, cultures continuously spread as well. A piece of clothing that originated in Colombia could easily make its way to the Philippines and vice versa. However, this spread caused controversy on who should and should not participate in another ethnicity’s culture.

Cultural appropriation refers to the act of claiming a cultural element, which does not belong to you. It usually applies when a dominant group takes or borrows something from a minority group that gets exploited or oppressed. Most times, the significance of a cultural element does not get acknowledged or educated upon when appropriated. Not only does this behavior offend specific cultures, but it also develops a societal culture divide due to the lack of respect exhibited.

Historic practices such as yoga, meditation, and saging often become a white-washed, ingenuine version of their former selves. These honored traditions turn into for-profit business ventures and remove the history from the practices themselves.
