Students dress up in the theme “Dynamic Duos” and take pictures in support of Sources of Strength (SOS) week. Today’s theme represents positive friends and the comfort in surrounding oneself with supportive, kind people. Participating students show they stick together and show encouragement no matter what. “I think it’s good for people to understand they have friends or surrounding people that care for them and can help them as they need it. It is hard to struggle alone, so having that peer positivity is definitely a good thing,” freshman Addison Hill said.

Sources of Strength advisors met in the lunchroom on Wednesday, March 30 to hand out candy with positive messages to spread kindness around NC. Students take a message, pass a message and spread an inspirational charitable act to their peers. “I like that Sources of Strength is providing this support because one small act can help improve so many students lives. One sentence could go a long way,” freshman student Mia Prozorac said.

Tuesday, March 29 serves as the second day for NC’s Sources of Strength (SOS) week. Today’s theme, Healthy Activity Dressup encourages students, faculty and staff to characterize themselves for athletic activities while setting a positive environment for the remainder of the week. Social and physically healthy activities aid in stress relief and provide an enlightened mood. Assistant principal, Dr. Jamie Gabel takes a stand against youth suicide while also showing her school pride.

Today kicks off the start of Sources of Strength (SOS) week. SOS works with students to help them recognize the signs of suicide and how to prevent them. This morning, members of SOS stood outside the building, welcoming students as they entered. Peer leaders and teachers gave out bracelets, leis, beaded necklaces and pins with the Sources of Strength logo. Peer leaders encouraged their fellow students to smile at their peers and make new interactions with people they do not know.

NC’s Sources of Strength hold a booth at B lunch. Students can fill out a paper stating their source of strength and can enter a raffle to win a Sources of Strength pin. Sources of Strength’s program helps students to feel safe when they need a hand to hold during rough times.

Maintaining one’s mental health should always remain a priority. The current youth of society continues to thrive as they head into the future but, mental illnesses such as depression can heavily affect the current generations and generations to come. Receiving the professional help people need remains important so that people can continue to better themselves.

Will Hargis teaches AP and on-level Psychology along with Melanie Shelnutt, who will retire later this year. In addition to advising multiple clubs, Hargis will take over the full AP psychology program beginning next school year. “I enjoy being a role model for the kids, and I have never regretted taking on so much in the school. I know that I am ready to take over the AP psych program,”Hargis said.

Students in the Sources of Strength (SOS) program drew the SOS wheel depicting mental health, family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, and medical access, challenging students to discover their sources of strength. SOS , a national peer-to-peer suicide prevention program, focuses on helping students find support to get them through difficult times. “The wheel is the basis of everything we do. We’ve found that the more of those aspects you have in your life, the more capable you are of handling situations that come up,” SOS supervisor Michelle Perlin said.
