Junior Kit Dupuis identifies as pansexual and nonbinary. They prefer They/Them pronouns. Kit struggled with their sexuality all through middle school, and was faced with rejection from their family when they came out.

NC junior Kit Dupuis began questioning their sexuality in seventh grade. They began playing the flute and worried about falling into the stereotypes of gay men playing the commonly feminine instrument. By finding friends in the LGBTQ+ community, Kit became more comfortable, but struggled with their identity for three years.

“There was this person I had been told I was my entire life and then realizing that was not correct I had to figure out who I actually was and what my identity really meant to me,” Kit said.

When they came out as pansexual and non-binary (using they/them pronouns), their friends and sister completely accepted them but the rest of their family did not. Kit’s mother kicked them out of their home for about a week. The rejection caused Kit to struggle with mental health problems. Once their parents realized what they did ruined the family, Kit came home. Their mom now tries to understand and accept her child.

“Kit is extremely supportive and caring, amd never fails to make their friends feel truly special about themselves. They have helped me to accept myself, and I could not ask for a better friend in my life,” Kit’s friend, senior Mandy McMasters said.
