Pumpkin Spice Latte impresses with new recipe

In response to recent criticisms surrounding popular food chains’ use of artificial ingredients, Starbucks reinvents their beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte and receives positive reactions from customers.

“Honestly, the new latte recipe is very similar to the old one, so it’s relatively easy to make. I think Starbucks is doing a great thing by taking responsibility and substituting in healthier ingredients,” barista Christina Palmer said.

Previously, Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte derived its pumpkin flavor from artificial caramel coloring, a syrup barely gaining FDA approval. Although the company kept their old recipe under wraps for many years, realization that the Pumpkin Spice Latte did not contain any real pumpkin enraged loyal customers. In response, developer Peter Dukes spent months experimenting with flavor combinations and eventually reached a similar taste. The new latte contains real pumpkin purẽ, enhanced with nutmeg and cinnamon, rather than caramel coloring.

“I love the new Pumpkin Spice Latte! I noticed a slight difference between the old and new recipe, but the knowledge that I’m drinking a healthier beverage outweighs the changes. The new latte definitely tastes less sugary and more pumpkiny, but I will continue to drink it regardless,” customer Sarah Merced said.

Originally introduced in 2003, years before pumpkin-flavored goods swarmed the market, Starbuck’s executives feared the drink would never take off. In fact, they even considered adding an orange creme latte to the holiday menu instead. Twelve years later, the Pumpkin Spice Latte stands as one of Starbuck’s most profitable seasonal beverages.

“I think the latte tastes exactly the same. The spices seem a little more prominent, but other than that, I don’t recognize any distinct differences,” customer Andrew Einhart said.

Clearly, developers of the new recipe succeeded in their attempt to capture the iconic taste of the Pumpkin Spice Latte in a healthier drink. Fortunately for customers, the new recipe stands as extremely similar to the traditional one. Additionally, Pumpkin Spice Latte fans can enjoy their beloved fall beverage, without ingesting harmful artificial colors and flavors.
