Former The Wanted boy band member, Nathan Sykes, released a new song titled “Kiss Me Quick” last month.

Sykes song and video aim to set him apart from his boy band roots, invoking a Justin Timberlake feel. The song’s catchy beat brings a familiar feel without necessarily sounding like every other pop song, but the video’s uncertainty leaves the viewers confused.  

“Kiss Me Quick” offers a catchy beat with an overly-repetitive hook. The song employs melodies and beats commonly used in pop-jazz music by artists like Justin Timberlake. Although it reminds the listener of other artists, Sykes’ possesses a soulful voice that can reach many ranges. At first it sounds as if Sykes’ fails to reach the high notes, but once the song progresses, it becomes evident that Sykes’ utilizes a wide voice range.

Although the song remains satisfactory, the video proves hard to understand. Simplistic and toned down, the video only includes the colors black and white and the video includes little meaning. No significant events occur and Sykes simply sings and dances the whole time. People also play instruments that serve little purpose. Since the music video does not contain a storyline, the video stands as an inadequate portrayal the song.

“Kiss Me Quick” fails to use lyrics that change the course of music, instead standing as an ordinary pop song that will be forgotten in a couple of weeks. At first, the song seems entertaining, but after the listener hears it multiple times, it gets annoying and difficult to forget.
