Over the eight editions of Anabel Tastes the Seasons I have written, readers always ask me, “Anabel, why do you only eat holiday foods?” As I failed to come up with an answer, I thought about what other food themes I could touch on, and then it hit me: dumpster diving. The act of scavenging local dumpsters for food has become increasingly popular recently, with more and more regarding it as a viable meal source. I decided to jump on the bandwagon.

Rotten Banana Peel:

I didn’t even know you could eat banana peels! Who knew? While the peel’s texture felt a little too chewy to me, I might eat one of these again in the future. Sure, I’d much prefer eating the inside of a banana, but nobody would throw one of those out.

Lay’s Salt and Vinegar potato chips:

I love salt and vinegar chips, so I got super excited when I stumbled upon these during my scavenging. Sadly, when I looked inside the empty bag, I found no chips. How dare whoever threw these out not leave any for me? I began to get angry. Smelling the residue where the delicious chips once lied failed to fully satisfy me.

Doritos:

Why am I even reviewing these? I hate Doritos. Thankfully all that was left in the bag were crumbs. 0/10.

Sour Patch Kids Bunnies:

I LIVE for the sour crystals on the outside of sour patch kids, so I felt absolutely ecstatic when I found these leftover easter wrappers sitting in the garbage can. Why do people even throw these away? Beats me.

Pop Secret Popcorn:

Whoever threw out a half eaten bag of popcorn absolutely made my day. Once I ate around the burnt pieces, I found a few buttery kernels sitting at the bottom. The bag smelled buttery too. 10/10, I would highly recommend.

From this experience I learned that people give dumpster diving a bad rep. Sure, it may not be the classiest way to eat, but it’s free, and you might get lucky and find tasty gold.

April Fool’s, you fool!
