The total solar eclipse, the first visible in the United States since 1979, extended school an additional 45 minutes, encouraging dismayed students to leave early. Students rushed for their checkout passes as the office scrambled to hand them out, overwhelming mentors and administrators in the process. Administrators took initiative and handed out check out passes themselves, individually calling teachers to retrieve the students, helping to relieve the chaos. “When I saw the line and I went into the attendance office, I just kept thinking there had to be a more efficient way,” assistant principal Stephen Revard said.
