Camila Cabello departed from the girl band Fifth Harmony in 2016 to pursue a solo career as a singer-songwriter.

“I felt like it was time to explore my own artistic vision,” Cabello said in an interview with Bizarre and Time Magazine.

Cabello’s first solo album, originally titled, The Hurting, The Healing, The Loving, was set to release in September of 2017, but the album remained unfinished and did not release.

After abandoning the original album title, Cabello told Rolling Stone in an interview that the flow of the songs became more upbeat than previously planned, so she changed the album name to Camila.

“At first, I thought it was gonna be, like, a sad-song album, then the more I got into the year, it was just better. I felt way happier. I feel that it has a good balance of the emo and the happy,” Cabello said.

After much anticipation for her album, Camila became public worldwide on Friday, January 12, 2018. The track list consists of ten songs, hitting multiple human emotions  throughout the album, including pain, healing, love, and joy.

“They [fans] are going to feel who I am. They are going to get a chunk of my heart, my experiences, my fantasies, and everything in-between,” Cabello said.

Only one day after the release, the album became the best selling album of the year, ranking at number one until moved down to number two two weeks ago.

The first song on Cabello’s album “Never be the Same” begins with an intoxicating, yet consuming, feeling about what love feels like from her perspective. The vocals and lyrics in “Never be the Same” adds intense emotion to the album, setting it apart from songs fans would typically expect from her. The beat flows perfectly throughout the song, allowing Cabello to change it up by including ad libs when necessary. “Never be the Same” has maintained the number 65 spot on the BillBoard Hot 100 for 71 weeks straight.

Transitioning into a more vulnerable side of Cabello, the second song on the album, “All These Years,” shows her listeners this perspective. The lyrics show the negative emotions contained in the song.

Cabello continues to express her pain, vulnerability, and love in her other songs “Consequences” and “Something’s Gotta Give.”

The album takes a turn from slow and meaningful to upbeat love songs that give fans a look into her desires and inner thoughts. With songs like, “Inside out,” “Into It,”and “She loves Control,” listeners cannot help but boogie their bodies.

“I had this crush for such a long time, and I was just daydreaming about this person and “Into It” was basically just the thing I would say to that person,” Cabello said on YouTube Live.

“The song gets me hype, I love the beat and the lyrics, I’ll be listening to the song and then I’m like okay, and then the beat drops and she sings “She Loves Control,” and I just start dancing,” junior Janiah Daniels said.

The most exciting song on the album “Havana” makes listeners blast the volume and begin to sing and dance along. “Havana” moved down to number three on the BillBoard Hot 100 for one week, after holding the number two position for three weeks, and number one position for seven weeks straight.

Cabello’s other songs “In the Dark” and “Real Friends” express her experiences with people, giving fans access to questions that parade around her mind.

Currently, Cabello debuts at number four on the BillBoard 200 album chart. With an upcoming tour this summer, fans wait in anticipation to witness her perform live.
