Warrior fastpitch softball wins gold in five game series
September 5, 2014
Lady Warriors fastpitch softball team took home the gold in Brunswick, GA, in the annual “Softball in the Sand” tournament run by Brunswick High School.
The undefeated team throughout the tournament won all five of the games played. With wins on Friday against Savannah Day (6-3) and Excel Christian Academy (5-0), the Warriors took the fast track to the gold. Last year, the Warriors trekked home with a first place trophy in the silver bracket, but this year, they felt determined to strive further.
Saturday’s games proved the Warriors deserved the gold with wins against Brantley County (10-4) in their first bracket game, Brunswick High School (9-1) to take them to the championship, and Apalachee (8-3) in the final game of the day.
The team showed extraordinary strength throughout the day and never faltered when the games hit rough patches. Senior pitcher Olivia Mould lead the team in the pitching section of the tournament, as she pitched a fair share of the games, while junior Hannah Ross, sophomore Julie Sanderlin, and freshman Rayna Ezzell shouldered the rest of the load.
The Warriors also relied on major key players on the defensive side of the field. Senior shortstop Bryanna Vazquez , senior center field Casey Page, and senior first baseman Carli Troutman started at their position for all five games in the tournament. It seems obvious that the seniors control the field this year, with five out of the nine positions taken by them.
The offense won the title for the Lady Warriors. With a total of 38 runs, the Lady Warriors never stopped crossing home plate.
With the gold championship under their belt, the Lady Warriors look towards the rest of their goals. At the top of that list remains retaining the number one ranking in the region and advancing to state for the first time in three years. The team holds high hopes this season and looks forward to more wins in the future.
