Friday, October 25, NC’s National Honors Society (NHS) hosted a Trunk or Treat from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. involving candy, games and costumes for the local Kennesaw and Acworth family and friends. The Halloween-centered event, organized by NHS, allowed students the opportunity to engage in a spooky event to entertain children within the community.
Senior magnet and non-magnet students inducted into the prestigious NHS club organized into 13 small groups to decorate a car trunk and dress up — according to their chosen theme — to hand out candy and engage in games and activities for nearby-residing families with young children. Each team faced the requirement to decorate a trunk or table, purchase candy and advertise the event. Simultaneously engaging NC students in a community event and celebrating the Halloween spirit, the Trunk or Treat event promoted school spirit to celebrate the spooky season. The week before the event, students could decorate posters, later hung up around the school, to advertise the event.
At around 4 p.m., NHS students enjoyed pizza while moving all of their equipment needed — including inflatables and hay bales — into the bus parking lot. Bounce House Rentals Plus provides a bounce house for attending students and children to enjoy. The teams then began to decorate their trunks with spiderwebs, pumpkins and other decorations that fit their theme. From Scooby-Doo to Hogwarts, students started to change into their costumes and added finishing touches to their trunks. Several groups included fun additions such as face-painting, corn-hole and fortune-telling games to bring attraction to their set-ups. As the music played, students’ faces lit up as the spook-filled night began.
“Getting to see the different trunks and all the cute lights was my favorite part. I had all this stuff because my brother did a trunk or treat and so all of these are just decorations from my house. I love that movie [Hocus Pocus] so we picked it as our theme,” magnet senior Mollie McIvor said.
Trunk-or-treaters decked out in their Halloween attire began to arrive right on time — at 6 p.m. — to move from trunk to trunk gaining handfuls of candy and toys. Countless NC students also showed their support by attending and bringing friends. As the night roared on, dance parties broke out and even a flash mob dance to Michael Jackson’s famous song “Thriller” occurred. As the NHS students strengthened their bond with each other and the new NHS advisers, the students created new connections with their surrounding community.
“My favorite part of tonight was seeing everybody come out, have fun, get dressed up, dance to the music and everything — everybody seems to be having fun. My theme was Monsters Inc. because it’s a classic scary film for the little kids. I just think it’s such a cute little film and so special for the holidays,” magnet senior Noah Quarless said.
As the first time ever hosting this event at NC, NHS marks the October 25 Trunk or Treat a success. While numerous candy and drink refill trips occurred, the triumph of the event became a clear notion that the event would repeat in the following years. NHS members plan to continue to serve the surrounding committee with supply drives and volunteer opportunities.
“It was so fun and so nice to see the little kids and people come from our school. My favorite part was decorating our car and setting up our little obstacle course. It was fun seeing all the little kids jump and I’m glad we got to do this event,” senior Mackenzie Pharr said.
