Fall marks change and new beginnings: changes not only for leaves but for communities. This year, dozens of family-owned businesses celebrate copious years of operation in the Kennesaw area. A multitude of family-owned establishments celebrate the changing of the season and among these, Cagle’s Family Farm, Uncle Shucks and Sleepy Hollow Farm bring thousands of families joy this autumn season.
Cagle’s Family Farm arose from a rich history surrounding their farm. Beginning in 1936, the Cagle Diary follows the journey of the Cagles as they improved their farm which provided food for their family. As 1995 rolled around, the farm shifted towards agri-tourism which resulted in an influx of educational activities to city-slicker children and families.
Flash-forward to the present day, the fifth generation of Cagles continue the business of agri-tourism with slight changes occurring every year. The Cagle Family Farm offers over 25 activities and adds new additions every year that families can enjoy for hours on end. These activities include pumpkin patches, a corn maze, hayrides and bonfires, among others.
“I’ve only been to pumpkin patches once or twice in my life and they were pretty creative. I went with my mom and her friends and I believe they quite enjoyed it, even as adults. I know that I enjoyed them [pumpkin patches] and I want to go again one day,” magnet junior Aundrea Brown said.
Uncle Shucks Farm also provides a pumpkin patch and corn maze. However, this establishment features a staggering 15-acre corn maze, a haunted trail, a jumping pad and other fall activities. This cozy farm in Dawsonville, Georgia remains a favorite among locals. The farm also provides refreshments to energize guests. These refreshments include traditional fair food, desserts and a variety of snack-like foods.
Uncle Shuck’s hours of operation for October run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Unfortunately, families cannot bring pets, but the farm welcomes service animals. Groups remain encouraged and tickets range anywhere from five to 22 dollars.
Sleepy Hollow Farm, which originally opened over 40 years ago, boasts copious activities for loyal patrons. Every year, the list of newcomers expands and the business finds itself with a plethora of guests. The farm features several activities including a pumpkin patch, corn maze and other types of proceedings for the entire family to enjoy. The area also presents an exclusive escape room in a cozy cabin located on the property. After paying a fee, guests can enjoy hours or days of excitement at this quiet farm full of fall fun.
While not only offering wonderful Fall traditions, Sleepy Hollow Farm combines various holidays to create this versatile farmstead. Families can pick out a Christmas tree, enjoy fall activities and even a spring festival that includes a crafting event. Through the 40 years of business, the local farm underwent minuscule changes apart from the rare additions and renovations, maintaining a look that passes from generation to generation.
“I’ve visited multiple pumpkin patches with my younger sister and brother. Typically there would be games and activities there as well, so I would have quite a fun time. Every time I got valuable family time, and fun out of it,” magnet junior Aiyanna Johnson said.
These three family-owned farms remain part of the various fall activities in the area as the owners establish friendly welcomes for new guests. While these farms do not normally allow pets, service animals remain welcome as well as all family members and friends. These farms will surely bring new traditions to this fall season.
