Students thrill with Shakespeare performance
NC students performed one of William Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, April 16 through 19.
“All the kids worked really hard and were very devoted. They decided to take on the full length play instead of an edited, shorter version” Mrs. Ozechowski, drama teacher, said.
This classical comedy, written by the ever known legend in the 1590’s, follows Athenian lovers and six actors into a fairy-infested forest. The characters fall victim to magical creatures and perform ridiculous actions to the joy and delight of the fairies.
The play gets reenacted across the world, and NC’s drama club felt extremely honored to partake in the production.
“Shakespearian plays are a huge step out of a lot of peoples comfort zone. Its really awesome to see everyone step out and try something new,” senior Kim Diaz, who played Hippolyta, said.
Compared to other plays of Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream possesses more accessible and understandable language, and audiences of all types will find laughter and enjoyment.
“The humor in this play isn’t like you have to read between the lines and wonder if you’re supposed to laugh or not. It is obviously funny,” junior Matt Long, who played Demetrius, said.
This play could not show without some minor setbacks. While preparing, the scheduled rehearsals changed due to numerous snow days. Characterization existed as another obstacle. It takes countless weeks of practice to achieve the essence of another person.
“Some people have trouble connecting with their character and going deeper into becoming them,” Diaz said.
The show possessed minor flaws, but other than that, A Midsummer Night’s Dream satisfied the audience with humor and charm. The audience thoroughly enjoyed all the ironic situations the characters put themselves in.
