Following the release of “Wicked” November 22, fans all over the globe anxiously awaited the sequel “Wicked: For Good,” which directors announced in the credits of the initial movie. The producers planned to release the film November 2025, exactly a year after its predecessor, but following a dramatic event March 30, producers have decided to withhold the already-recorded part two. Social media platforms exploded with various theories including breakups, arguments and potential affairs.
Just 20 minutes after the “Wicked” Instagram released the news, creator Chris Olsen posted a Tiktok video with screenshots showing that Ariana Grande, who portrayed Glinda, unfollowed Ethan Slater, who plays Boq. This led various other social media enthusiasts to post similar content, speculating about a breakup between the couple. Grande and Slater began dating during March 2023 and reportedly began facing issues during the production of “Wicked” when Slater caught feelings for Marissa Bose, who played Nessa Rose. According to various sources, Grande caught Slater singing his part of “Dancing Through Life,” which served as a love song for Slater and Bose, in bed. All of these breakup assumptions led to Grande releasing a statement on the matter.
“After my breakup with Ethan Slater, I fell into a deep depression. Every single time I saw anything ‘Wicked’ themed I would begin to sob on the spot. Since 2025 is the year of self-care, I decided it was best for me and I threatened to sue the Wicked production if they released ‘Part Two.’ I am sorry to all of my fans who have been looking forward to this movie, but in order for there to be no tears left to cry I must just say thank you; next. I truly hope that Ethan realizes that we can’t be friends. I was extremely shocked to find out that another one of my co-stars actually decided to sue the Wicked production,” Grande said.
This statement resulted in fans investigating deeper into the lore and creating new theories as they attempted to figure out who sued “Wicked.” Supporters quickly began to focus on Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, as she previously held complaints against the movie producers. During the filming of the musical, the green paint covering Erivo ended up poisoning her skin, leading to numerous rashes and breakouts. Fans believe that this may have prompted Erivo to sue the Wicked production, resulting in the discontinuation of the second movie.
Another fan theory concludes that Grande lost her voice due to her use of Ozempic. In a recently released study, scientists discovered that Ozempic could lead to voice loss because the drug commonly shrinks vocal cords. This can detrimentally impact users as they may lose their voice forever. The media has suspected Grande used Ozempic since her appearance in the original movie and recently she stopped posting videos of her singing. Due to Grande’s leading role in the second movie, fans believe this may have led to the decision.
Although producers and cast members have not provided a reason for the withholding, numerous of these fan theories seem to match up with what may have happened. No matter who sued “Wicked,” Grande, Erivo or even Slater, the news left the world distraught. As fans investigate further to find someone to blame, these actors will continue to shine bright under the scrutinizing eyes of the public.
