After the blue team jumped out to a fast 21-0 start, the orange squad staged a furious comeback to halt the game at a 24-24 tie in North Cobb’s annual varsity spring football scrimmage.

Sophomore kicker Will Horton nailed a 37 yard field goal as time expired to complete the comeback as he converted on two field goals and six extra points.

The initial blue spurt began when sophomore quarterback Will Lovett hit junior receiver Deandre Cottle for a 12 yard touchdown. He followed it up with a 20 yard pass to Allon Johnson and a 40 yard run of his own to give the blue a commanding 21-0 lead.

Lovett and junior Trey Coryell, a transfer from Perry high school, are the two primary contenders to take over the signal-calling for Tyler Queen, and Lovett appeared to distance himself in the first quarter.

However, Coryell took over on the ensuing drive as he scampered for a 15 yard touchdown, to settle the halftime score at 21-7.

In the third quarter, Coryell connected with junior receiver Andrew Lubbers to bring the orange team within seven. Senior linebacker Manny Pelzers pick six of Lovett on the following drive tied the game.

“The pick 6 was big,” Pelzer said, “it gave us a little swagger when we tied the game.”

Two fourth quarter field goals ended the scrimmage in a tie, which Coach Queen enjoyed.

“That’s how I wanted it to end.” he said. “We’ve got a lot to work on but both sides competed and played hard.”
