Superstore checks out: NBC’s newest comedy impresses
December 8, 2015
NBC’s new comedy, Superstore, premiered on November 30 with hopes to attract fans of workplace comedies. The one hour pilot aimed to deliver lines that distinguished the characters from other shows, and allow viewers to see what differentiates it from other fall comedies. The pilot started off slow and did not unveil what direction the show hoped to explore, but towards the end, the jokes began to flow and the scenes finally showed what kind of humor could be found in other episodes.
The first episode introduced America Ferrera, who portrays Amy, a worker of the made up “cloud 9” supermarket. She takes pride in her job and follows the rules without being innovative. Most avid readers and TV watchers know what to expect next, a boy who does his work poorly but shows creativity becomes her love interest. In Superstore, Jonah, played by Ben Feldman, fills that role. On his first day at the supermarket, Jonah manages to destroy a display of toilet paper, improperly stock soft drinks, and set the price of all electronics to eighty-five cents. Like all other love stories, their impending relationship seems doomed, especially when at the end of the episode, Amy discreetly places a wedding ring on her finger.
The show offers diversity in characters and allows for the viewer to receive sufficient background information for a majority of the cast. Some characters did not receive as much screentime but their personalities became evident in the scenes they appeared in. The character’s stories remain interesting throughout the episodes and their arcs have the ability to grow in upcoming episodes.
With the potential to become more than just a fall premiere, Superstore offers humor and an interesting set up. The show does not include a vast topic of humor but the situations make up for what it lacks. Superstore airs again on NBC January 4, 2016.
