From Netflix to cable viewing, people who enjoy watching television in their free time usually relish either weekly show releases or binge-watch through their televisions. While both forms of watching contain downsides and positives, the current binge model forced down the throats of viewers shows unreasonable aspects.

Binge-culture: revamped and ruined

Nowadays, finding an entertaining show as a teen requires almost no effort. Social media only boosts the popularity of trending shows like Euphoria, 13 Reasons Why, and Stranger Things, causing large audiences to flock to streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO GO. Never Too Young, the first soap opera geared specifically toward teenagers, premiered in 1965, starring Tony Dow from Leave it to Beaver and Thomas Rettig from the Lassie TV series. The show documented the daily lives of a group of teenagers who frequented a beach hangout called “The High Dive.” 50 years later, one could argue that this particular premise resembles several others that came after. Aside from the criticism they may receive for their inappropriate and controversial content, critics also call today’s teen shows unoriginal and unrealistic.

This year marks a revolution of Netflix Originals. With shows all about Ted Bundy and his life as a serial killer to superheros being adopted to save the world after their father’s death. Excited to watch more shows Netflix fan and sophomore Daniella King watched Conversations with a Killer; the Ted Bundy Tapes and loved it immediately. “I could not stop watching it as soon as I started it, it was so good and I would for sure watch it again” King said. Fans prepare with all the originals coming out and could not be more excited for the upcoming shows.
