With a 26-8 record, wrapping up Lady Warrior softball feels bittersweet
October 27, 2014
The Lady Warrior softball season ended with heads held high and no regrets. With a record of 26-8, the Lady Warrior’s retained their “refuse to lose attitude” until the end.
“I thought the we really came together as a team this year. Instead of relying on one person to carry the team, each person did their best to help us win. That’s what a team should look like and we has a great season because of that,” senior Josi Elder said.
Over the course of the season, NC played in three different tournaments over the season and went undefeated in each of them. Out of 16 road games, the Lady Warriors won all but four. Their persistent attitude caused for a lot of comebacks throughout the season. The team scored over 218 runs over the course of the season.
“What a team. My 2014 Lady Warriors exemplified the true meaning of team every day at practice, at games and all team events. This group of girls always supported each other in good or bad times, and we had mostly good times. We won 26 games and set a new winning percentage record. This group would never give up. We came back in several games to win against top ranked teams. We were really never down even if the score indicated something different. The Marietta Daily Journal quoted me after our 4-3 come from behind, extra inning win over Harrison, ‘our team has a refuse to lose attitude.’ I have never had this much fun coaching as I did this season in my 30th year of coaching high school softball. This team made it fun and had fun winning. These girls are just a great group of people that I call my softball family,” Coach Weaver said.
One big change that will impact the team is the loss of the four-year varsity starter and lead-off batter, Bryanna Vazquez. Vazquez has been a big defender on the field since freshman year. She started every single game at shortstop and was only taken out for one inning throughout the entire season. The team will miss her along with the rest of the seniors Josi Elder, Olivia Mould, Carli Troutman, Kayla Trumbull, Casey Page, and Akhila Alwan.
“This team and this season especially has had a big impact on me. I met a lot of great people and knowing that I will be in college next year and maybe not seeing them for a long time hits me pretty hard. This team has made me the person I am today and I don’t know what I would do or where I would be without them. It is such an honor to be apart of this program,” Vazquez said.
