As the Northern Hemisphere makes headway into the winter season fashion lovers head to the stores to find a new wardrobe that fits the upcoming aesthetics of winter. Since winter calls for layering, the season presents an ideal opening for mixing and matching various styles and trends. From UGGs to fur coats to folded sweaters, the possibilities of winter fashion remain endless.

Although the winter season draws in frigid winds and icy roads, the cold weather opens up the opportunity to sport the latest winter fashion trends. With layered tops and winter boots featuring cool-toned color palettes, fashion lovers can engage in their favorite chilly-weather clothing combinations of various styles and aesthetics

“My favorite clothes for winter are baggy sweatshirts and baggy jeans. Even though I like winter clothing, my favorite season for fashion is probably fall because you can start wearing baggy clothing because it’s not too hot or too cold, so it’s a perfect combination. Winter is still nice though when the weather is warmer,” magnet freshman Matthew Mayette said.

UGG boots and leg warmers

Coming back into popularity, the world-famous UGG boots have stomped out the winter boot competition for their unique catalog. Although the UGG brand gained prominence for its taller boots, winter lovers now rave over UGG’s lower-cut boot selection. Prominent for their simplistic but fashionable design, the Chestnut Classic Ultra Minis and Classic Mini IIs serve as the perfect short boots to match with overlapped leg warmers. For shoppers who desire a boot for outdoor and indoor wear, the Tasman slipper provides an ideal comfy look; stylists can pair the Black Tasmans with black or white tucked-leg warmers.

UGG created a built-in leg warmer boot, the Classic Mini Sherpa Corduroys; however, they only appear on the website for a limited time. Diehard UGG fans can find the boots on resale sites such as Poshmark or Depop.

Mini skirts and warm tights

Fashion lovers should not throw their favorite mini skirts to the back of the closet—sweaters and fleece-lined tights create the perfect loophole for those who love sporting short skirts year-long. Fleece-lined tights look remarkably similar to the average stockings but with a soft fabric lined inside for warmth. People can buy tights with a fleece lining in a shade similar to their skin color for a realistic look. These tights work best with dark-colored mini-skirts and knee-high boots

Unfortunately, fleece-lined tights usually only come in black sheer. For those who would rather dress in different colors and designs, various stores and online shops sell sweater tights. With thicker material and several designs in different shades, sweater tights work best with a loose mini-skirt and ankle boots.

Fur-trimmed coats and low-rise jeans

Two flawless fashion items returning to prominence, faux fur jackets and low-rise jeans, work best when paired together. Non-puffer fur-trim jackets match flawlessly with low-rise jeans for an East Coast winter look. Since puffer jackets have taken a rise in prominence in recent years and now rule the coat market, fashion enthusiasts should search for these types of jackets and jeans at thrift stores or consignment shops

For matching ideas, shoppers pair jackets with dark colors, such as brown, black or burgundy, dark wash low-rise jeans—preferably with flared bottoms or a baggy fit—and a neutral-colored statement belt.

Fold over sweaters and shoulder bags

Even though winter commonly calls for fully-wrapped outfits without exposed skin, off-the-shoulder sweaters can work as an outfit option on warmer days. These knit tops show both shoulders but remain tight-fitted on the chest and waist. The exposed shoulder creates an opportunity to place a statement accessory on top: a shoulder bag. The bag should contrast the sweater in a clashing shade for emphasis; Mean Girls’ character Regina George remains a prominent example of this outfit with her popular black fold-over knit top matched with her rare pink Louis Vuitton Monogram Cherry Blossom Pochette.

“My favorite winter fashion combination is leggings, thick sweaters, winter boots and a hat. I don’t have UGGs, but I really want them…winter is great for clothes, silk press season and the holidays are coming up. But, my least favorite winter fashion trend I’m not a big fan of is those thin jackets with a false puffer design—it looks stupid to me. You might as well wear a regular puffer jacket if you want the look,” magnet freshman Skye Pierre said.
