The Toys for Tots organization creates magic by turning children’s Christmas wishes into reality, ensuring that every child receives the joy of the holiday season. People around the United States unite to support the organization, generously purchasing and donating presents. The initiative came to life in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks sparked the idea, subsequently witnessing millions of donations throughout the holiday months.

Diana Hendricks, Bill’swife, played a pivotal role in inspiring the creation of Toys for Tots. Her vision unfolded when she requested her husband to donate her hand-crafted dolls to an organization that would support people in need for Christmas. However, at the time, an organization of sorts did not exist. Bill returned home to tell his wife that no organization existed to fulfill her request. Unfazed by the setback, Diana worked endlessly to establish one.

Hendricks tirelessly endeavored to gain contact with A-list celebrities, urging them to support the newly created organization. Together with fellow Marines, Hendricks gifted 5,000 toys to families in need across Los Angeles, California. Recognizing the potential impact, the commanding officer requested that all Marine reserve sites hold a campaign to widen the reach of Toys For Tots and elevate it to a national event. As the organization gained traction, Hendricks asked his dear friend Walt Disney to support Toys for Tots by branding their first poster, creating history in the process.

Toys for Tots local campaigns span across eight hundred communities, reaching over 50 states. These campaigns kick off in late October, extending efforts through early January. Families within the local community gather to buy and create magical gifts for children to discover under their Christmas trees. Simultaneously, dedicated Marines work tirelessly to separate unwrapped toys by age and gender.

“One of my close friends told me about Toys for Tots and I thought it was amazing, so my family and I started donating around three years ago. We went to Walmart and picked out a handful of presents and dropped them off at one of the locations near us and we have been doing it ever since. I think Toys for Tots has made a huge impact in helping kids and I love being a part of a good cause,” NC parent Liz Johnson said 

Toys for Tots has built strong relationships with welfare agencies and social services to guarantee kids in need receive gifts around Christmas time. Local churches actively participate in handing out gifts to families, showing their support and kindness to those in need. The organization prides itself in its commitment to assisting those who require help, successfully achieving thousands of goals with the support of local communities and partner agencies. While popular brands and stores offer various ways to contribute during the Christmas season, the impact of Toys for Tots stands unparalleled, distributing 24.4 million toys each year. First Lady Nancy Reagan rallied with Toys for Tots in the past, working with the organization to hand out wrapped presents to young children in need. This marked the first time in history that a First Lady partnered with Toys for Tots. The trend of the first lady partaking in distributing toys for tots gifts continued with Barbara and Laura Bush, followed by Michelle Obama. 

“Once again, through Toys for Tots, you all are getting it done, and you’re doing it by spending countless hours making the holidays so much brighter for so many children across the country. And it takes a lot of hard work to get this done. You spend months, sometimes, out in the cold, collecting all the toys, those donation boxes. You spend days and nights sorting all the toys. I mean, I come here for a couple of hours, but you guys are doing this day after day for weeks at a time. You handle the mind-boggling logistics of getting all these toys to children across this country,” former first lady, Obama said 

Through the years, Toys for Tots has acted as a comfort blanket for those struggling to find relief during the holidays. Toys for Tots relies on support from local communities along with donations of toys. Donating anything from books, clothes and older toys can help the organization and the family. As the years progress, Toys for Tots hopes to donate thousands of toys each year with communities across the nation helping them accomplish their goal.
