In lieu of the new regulations placed on cell phones around the NC campus, the administration scrambled, attempting to outsource a method to curb the loss of a coveted piece of technology in the classroom. After weeks of planning and strategizing, a solution blossomed, filled with new restrictions yet familiar aspects already known to several students. In an unprecedented move from NC’s higher-ups, classrooms will now allow the presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in an attempt to bridge modern technology skills with familiar hallmarks of traditional teaching.
“When my dad told me that students can now use AI in class, I honestly did not believe him. There have been so many problems with AI in the past, so I wonder how kids and teachers can deal with it. Honestly, it’s going to help a lot of people. In the past, I’ve used platforms like Grammarly or Notion to help out on old assignments,” magnet senior AJ Auld said.
Beginning April 7, students can now utilize platforms such as ChatGPT, Beautiful AI, Adobe Firefly or Jasper to aid them with assignments. From entire essays to crafting a funny photo for a project, the possibilities remain endless; by involving AI in various forms throughout the World Wide Web, students can combine skills used on apps such as Instagram or TikTok to further their learning.
By allowing young people to utilize AI, NC can better prepare their students for the changing job market in the U.S. According to the information technology (IT) company Forrester, AI stands to replace upwards of 2.4 million jobs within the next five years. The use of these modernized technologies among teenagers allows NC’s students to become increasingly prepared for future careers to gain a higher capacity of opportunities in comparison to other graduates.
The NC Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) has spent the past two weeks finalizing strict guidelines for parents to follow regarding helping their children navigate AI at home. Through teaching every member of the school community the importance of safely using these new technologies now available. With a new hope on the horizon, the NC community excitedly looks forward to preparing their students adequately for the future.
April Fools, you fool!
XOXO,
