Lady Warriors sign with competitive athletic programs
April 20, 2015
Sports participation improves more than cardiorespiratory systems and enhances muscle development. Engaging in athletic programs provide opportunities for advancement, leadership, and teamwork. Student-athletes collaborate for a common assignment, collectively building a legacy and individually building their reputations.
With this work comes scholarships and graduation to collegiate sports. In celebration of prospective college athletes, Warrior Nation’s athletic department hosted another signing day on April 15.
“It’s a great way of showcasing the talent in the school, especially when these kids’ pictures show up in the paper. I think when people look at it and see North Cobb’s name there, it has to make them feel good. We are really able to showcase our girls’ program. We really shine on that side,” Athletic Director Bucky Horton said.
The athletes’ teammates, friends, and family congregated within the media center, awaiting the reputable contract signing. After the light reception, each Lady Warrior received individual recognition and signed their contracts.
Senior Peyton Reid received a lacrosse scholarship to Reinhardt University. Lacrosse coach Kathy Ezzell noticed Reid’s commitment during tryouts as she pursued a deep interest in the sport. Since freshman year, she developed her elite skill as goalie, which justifies her scholarship: “She’s really talented, and she has an extremely positive attitude. She has never lost faith in our team or herself,” senior Rachel Poma, lacrosse captain, said.
Right-side hitter senior Simone Maxwell accepted a volleyball scholarship to the University of Montevallo. Suffering from a torn ACL, Maxwell began her volleyball career as a sophomore. But her comeback season proved relentless, making the JV team and later heading to varsity. She contributed to several team wins, and Coach Auld asserts Maxwell’s integral role in winning the state championship. Outside of Warrior athletics, Maxwell participates in travel volleyball and competes in tournaments, sharpening her skills for college: “Simone works so hard on and off the court. She’s the best teammate you can ask for, and she’ll impact any team she’s on in a positive way,” teammate Savanna Gonzales said.
Tennis player senior Jasmin Morgan committed to the University of Illinois-Springfield. As team leader, Morgan remained an important part in the team’s success. Described as composed, she always displays a positive attitude despite the outcome. Coach Smith also stated how Morgan underwent surgery for her hand, yet she still committed to playing her matches: “
Soccer captain, senior Abbie Duckett received a scholarship to Emmanuel College. Duckett’s on-field performance reflects the dedication she contributes to soccer. Coach Romero acknowledges Duckett’s athletic strength and ability, as well as her avid leadership abilities. He remarks that her small stature juxtaposes the impact she has on the team.
“She’s an amazing soccer player. She’s always been a great leader, and she’s a really nice person and captain. I enjoy co-captaining with her and playing on the field with her. She’s so very deserving of this scholarship,” senior Shani Jefferson, captain, said.
On behalf of the entire Warrior Nation, congratulations to these student athletes.
