A preview to the Hoopcoming festivities
January 17, 2017
Each spring semester NC hosts a Hoopcoming week, and this year, for the first time in NC history, the week will end with a Sadie Hawkins dance. Hoopcoming consists of four dress-up days as students did not have school on Monday, January 16 due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
On Tuesday, students dress up supporting their favorite sports team by participating in jersey day. Students broadcast their love for any team, from any sport. With the Falcons still in the playoffs, Falcons jerseys appear all over the school.
Arielle Sterrett, a junior at NC, enjoyed the chance to represent her team: “I’m really really excited that an Atlanta team made the playoffs and hopefully we continue to the Super Bowl. I’m so glad I got to represent the Falcons today for jersey day,” Sterrett said.
On Wednesday, Hoopcoming week presents students with the opportunity to become creative, dressing up as their favorite television or book character. Students go all out on character day, associating with their friends and dressing as characters from the same fandom.
“I’m going shopping with my best friends and we are dressing as the Powerpuff Girls. We like to think that we resemble Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom,” senior Hailey Wisniewski said.
Wednesday night, Hoopcoming boasts the dodgeball tournament starting at 7 p.m. Students coordinate their own teams and both men and women may participate.
Kaden Barfield, a sophomore at NC, cannot wait to participate in the tournament for the second year in a row: “My only goal this year is to beat the senior boys,” Barfield said.
Thursday asks students to arrive in pajamas, perfect for any high schooler lacking sleep. Students may wear any pajamas to school as long as they do not violate the dress code.
“I have North Cobb pajamas so I’m really excited to wear them to school on pajama day,” senior Nina Poguntke said.
Spirit day takes place on Friday, which fits accordingly considering students’ spirit surfaces most commonly by the end of the week. On spirit day “we are orange” becomes a reality; students dress with the brightest orange they can.
Senior Isaiah Hammond plans to completely show off his school pride: “I’m wearing my orange Vineyard Vines button down to support spirit day,” Hammond said.
Hoopcoming week extends past the school week. On Saturday, January 21st, the Sadie Hawkins Dance makes its premiere. Different from any dance NC hosted in the past, the dance requires girls to ask out the boys.
“During Dr. Roach’s class, she always asks if anyone has any announcements, so I stood up and held up my poster to Cole that said, “I didn’t want coal for Christmas but I do want Cole for Sadie’s,” senior Nadin Catak said.
