At long last, Atlanta will host a hockey team again. After a six year hiatus and a stop in the industrial, frozen, forsaken deathland of Winnipeg, Canada, the Thrashers will return to Philips Arena and give the city another shot at grabbing a title in one of the four major American sports.

Although many fear the team will fail to generate ticket sales, they sold well enough in Winnipeg and Atlanta’s population contains millions of carpetbaggers who have exploded the city’s population and would love to root for a hockey team in their new home town. To really make the team Atlanta’s own and in an attempt to move on from a forgettable past, Liberty Media group, the organization in charge of the Braves and Hawks, announced the new team’s logos and colors. The “Atlanta Peach” will be one of the few singular nicknamed teams in sports.

“They hope to unite the city and much of the south east with a unifying singular ‘Peach moniker’ and brand the team as different and a little bit unique in a largely northern and Canadian driven sport,” Liberty Media spokesman, Jakob Goldsberg, said.

To help tie together the old and new ages of the team, the Peach hopes to acquire veterans and Thrasher legends Marian Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk to provide support, savvy, and mentorship to a young team. The two bring back memories for old Thrashers fans, as Hossa became the first player to score 100 points in a season with Atlanta in an All-Star 2007 year. Fans best remember Kovalchuk as the face of the Thrashers after playing for the team from 2001 to 2010.

The team will host a parade to celebrate the homecoming today, and will have the first three picks in the NHL draft this offseason to help kickstart the roster. The team announced intentions to compete for a Stanley Cup within its first couple years and has much of the city ecstatic for the chance to watch hometown hockey again.

“OH MY GOD I CAN’T WAIT I HAVEN’T SEEN A LIVE HOCKEY GAME SINCE I WAS A KID AND A REAL LIFE HOCKEY FIGHT AGAIN IT’S AMAZING THANK YOU SO MUCH LIBERTY MEDIA,” NC senior Maddox Trinklein, an avid hockey fan, said.

April Fool’s, you fool!
