The peaks of hiking

Redtop Mountain State Park, pictured in the photo, borders Lake Allatoona. Leading to both a lake and the top of a mountain, travelers can stay and enjoy the hikes in the recently built cabins. “Redtop is a really nice local spot to go hiking and camping. There’s a lot of wildlife which is really cool and they have lots of different trails. The lake is pretty to look at especially during the summer because people like to go down to kayak or canoe,” freshman Josephine Green said.

Hiking benefits all kinds of people through providing physical attention, mental stress release and relation buildings. This makes it a perfect activity to do in one’s free time. Not only does hiking benefit a person’s health, but it can take place anywhere so it can always provide a new experience.

Hiking exercises the body by burning calories and improving physical health. Core strength and improved balance come with the exercise. Walking up and down hills and mountains, crossing rivers and other obstacles make hiking an adventurous task. Hiking stands as a good balance between exercise and fun.

It also improves health by providing levels of vitamin D because of sunlight exposure depending on when the hike takes place. Beautiful nature and animals surround hiking zones, which attracts hikers to the areas. Disconnecting from electronics and spending time in nature brings a down-to-earth feeling. To create a different experience every time, one should explore various areas. In the fall, numerous hikers explore the outdoors to see the leaves turn to different colors. Outdoor activities like hiking also open up senses, which immensely benefits health.

“I like to hike because it is very relaxing and you can find amazing views. I feel like it soothes my mind, and when I get to the top it boosts my confidence. It is always cool for me to see what is around me while I’m hiking and you can look for different animals to entertain yourself,” freshman Carter Sams said.

Not only does hiking provide a workout, but it can help with mindsets and tranquility. Peaceful environments can help people relax and release stress. It unwinds the mind and provides time and space to think. Seeing other hikers on trails remains uncommon because hikes cover a lot of ground.

“I like to go outside and get fresh air. I like nature and surroundings when I go hiking because I feel very separated from the city. I feel less stressed when I am not in such a busy environment. My stress levels are always lower after hiking,” freshman Amelia McCarthy said.

Hiking helps build and strengthen relationships. Hiking in remote areas with a friend or family member can make hiking even more fun. Outside activities can require teamwork and bonding moments, making it the perfect place to go to build a healthy relationship with someone.

A quick search on park websites can help to get all the information needed for a well-planned hike. Hikes should occur in safe environments. Learning each hike’s different rules and etiquette prior to the hike will make for the best hike possible. Activities like littering and hiking off the trails prove disrespectful to the environment. Many trails have strict no waste rules, including not using plastic or using reusable bags.

Hikers can access the parks all day long at no fee. They only need a bottle of water and a number of snacks, depending on the hike, to stay hydrated and energized. Dressing in the proper clothing and even bringing a first aid kit will increase the safety of a hike. Knowing the best hiking spots to fit personal experience and level remains an important part of picking a hike. Slowly hiking more and more difficult trails will help build the right skills.

“They have less intense walks and some that are more of a harder workout. It’s nice that the mountain [Redtop] is not very far away so it’s easy to go without having to drive for a long time. Hikes for everyone are different and you can choose a trail that’s best for you,” freshman Josephine Green said.

When reaching the destination of a hike, the views and fresh air reward the hiker after the difficult adventure. The supportive hiking community uplifts and helps anyone new by advising the following: Do not push to do something extreme right away; ease up in level.
