NC starts construction for new on-campus dorms this summer ready to use for the 2023-24 school year. If chosen, all students can live on campus. Those choosing to live at NC will pay a fee of $1000 for a single semester or $1800 for both. With dorms, NC attendees will not need to drive to school each morning or catch a ride home after school. On-campus dorms will provide a major convenience for athletes along with those in extracurricular activities before and after school.

“I am so excited I don’t have to drop off and pick up my son every day anymore. Since he is a part of clubs that start before school, and sports after, I use so much gas and time taking him back and forth. Especially with these gas prices lately, I am not trying to spend more than I should. It’s great that the school is giving kids the opportunity to be independent and do things on their own. I really like that,” NC student mother Carrie Shepard said. 

The building comes with several amenities like a multi-purpose indoor court as well as a turf field on the ground level floor available for residents. NC will also provide an indoor gym and complimentary pool for those deciding to live on campus. The building contains a study room with school computers providing a quiet area for students to complete homework and other tasks. On the second floor, a dining hall serves breakfast and dinner every day of the week, along with lunch on weekends. Those living and visiting can park in a sublevel parking garage with the use of a parking pass.

  The establishment offers individual rooms as well as larger rooms holding up to four residents. Prices vary depending on selected rooms, but every room comes with a bathroom and mini fridge included. To reduce the chances of a fire, students can not use stoves or mini cookers in the dorm rooms.

Like any other building on campus, NC implements the same rules and will hold students to the same expectations. Mandatory scheduled dorm checks occur bi-weekly, along with random dorm checks if necessary. Outside doors lock Sundays through Thursdays at 1 a.m. and floor accessible doors lock at 1:30 a.m. Outside doors lock Fridays and Saturdays at 3 a.m. and floor doors remain open the whole day. All doors throughout the week unlock at five a.m. In case of an emergency, all doors will unlock allowing students to safely exit the premises. Officers will guard entrances at all times ensuring every child’s safety. Student residents will use key cards when entering personal rooms and every entrance.

Students taking Adam Cogbill’s engineering class created the blueprints for the new structure. Participants spent an entire year working on the project, which they finalized last week. Principal Moody encouraged students to design NC’s newest addition in hopes of incorporating the students’ work into the school. 

“I really wanted to challenge my engineering students and when Mr. Moody announced that there was going to be a dorm here on campus, I knew it was the perfect project. I and my classes tried several options and went through many trials and errors, but eventually decided on a design. I can’t wait for students to live in it. I think it’s going to be awesome and definitely an experience no other schools can offer,” Cogbill said.

Students must act and treat the new dorm-like any other NC facility. The privilege of dorms presented to occupants may result in consequences such as suspension or permanent expulsion from the dorm building along with all NC buildings if needed. NC stands as the first public high school in the United States to provide on-campus living, making history nationwide.
