Multiple controversial opinions arise regarding which season takes the top spot. People always find a way to bring the seasons of summer and winter back into the topic of discussion. Several factors come into play when deciding if winter or summer remains superior.

People typically choose winter as their favorite season because of the free time that it comes with. The winter season begins Wednesday, December 21, 2022, and will continue until Monday, March 2023. People celebrate various holidays during winter such as Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year and Kwanzaa. Several job regulations require employers to grant their employees free time or vacation time for the holidays they celebrate.

With the summer season starting Wednesday, June 21, 2023, schools across the nation release their students in late May through June. During the summer vacation, friends and family travel together out of state or outside the country. The out-of-country trips usually cost around $2,000. While this may cost a large amount in total, travelers swear the adventures taken and moments created to make the cost worth it.

“I love summer vacation because of the different things I get to experience when my family travels outside the country. We see so many different cultures when we leave the U.S. In the end, the cost doesn’t really matter as long as everyone involved had fun on the vacation,” sophomore Makenzie Johnson said.

Winter vacations tend to impact families and friends as compared to summer breaks, as people typically celebrate the holidays in winter with their loved ones. The average American spends $998 on Christmas gifts, which does not include the cost of travel to see family.

“I love the holidays in the winter the most because I always see my family. We always give each other a bunch of gifts and spend most of our time together. We always travel out of town to see so many friends and family and I always have the best time,” sophomore Marissa Grier said.

Both the winter and summer weather come with pros and cons. Depending on the location, summer serves excellent weather for beach trips, while winter offers perfect skiing weather. A person’s hobbies may influence the choice between the two seasons. Prices can also dictate the pros and cons of winter and summer. Summer remains the top expensive season, combining the prices of travel with transportation, food, child expenses and shopping.

“I don’t think I could ever decide between winter and summer. I always have the best time in both seasons. I think most of my favorite memories are definitely in summer cause I spend a lot of time with my friends, but winter is very calming to me cause I get to stay home and relax,” sophomore David Achamaja said.

Winter and summer contain peoples’ best memories and experiences. People spend time with loved ones and look forward to when the seasons return. Ultimately,  winter and summer present enjoyable times, exciting holidays and vacations and amazing experiences.
