When people fake tan, they hope to achieve the effects of a natural sun tan without exposure of the actual sun. Today, men and women can access several methods of tanning without the need of staining teas or natural sunlight.
Spray tanning refers to a mist solution of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) sprayed on an individual to darken their skin. DHA, also known as glycerone, reacts with the skin’s amino acids to create a bronzing effect. This method of fake tanning happens similarly to the process of natural sun tanning, where the body’s melanin production reacts after the exposure of sun. The benefits of spray tanning include custom color matching, which allows one to confirm their current and their desired skin tones to then consult with a professional who determines which spray color will best suit their customer. Clients also can receive an even coverage when spray tanned by a professional, however tanners can purchase their own spray tan machine if they wish to tan at home.
“I started fake tanning when I was in sixth grade. I’ve tried sun tanning, self tanning, spray tanning and tanning beds. I recommend [to a new tanner] doing spray tans over self tanner at first so they can get an idea of how tans work. Spray tans are made to one’s personal skin tone so they get exactly what they want,” senior Lauren Nettles said.
For those who may feel overwhelmed by the pigmentation of other fake tan methods, tanning drops ensure a non permanent and easily removable tan effect for users. One can easily find tanning drops in numerous chain stores, such as Walmart, Target, Walgreens and several stores that carry a beauty section. Since they mainly use the drops on their face, users of tanning drops can easily control the pigmentation by using a moisturizer as a mixer to lighten the formula. Tanning drops remain useful for those who wish to take away or add to their bronzed look due to the drops’ adaptable application.
Similar to tanning drops, which users typically only apply to their faces, self tanners allow for a natural sun-looking tan. Users require a tanning mitt, for their self tanner, to protect their hands from staining during the self-application process. Self tanner comes in several different forms, catering to various skin types. In gel, lotion, spray, foam and mousse, self tanner proves extremely popular as a form of fake tanning.
“Sun tanning will get one a natural tan and will help with vitamin D consumption. However, one can receive sun damage from the UV rays. I would definitely recommend fake tanning because you can use it year round, as [throughout the different seasons] the UV is not high year round,” Nettles said.
Fake tanning remains extremely convenient for those who missed a chance to tan during the summer. With fall approaching, Ultraviolet exposure decreases due to the lack of sunlight, naturally leading tanners to fake tan. It remains in one’s best interest to experiment and research different tanning methods to achieve their desired bronze look following the end of summer.
