With cooler, autumn weather, the 2024 fashion agenda faces trends and uprisings in specific color palettes and textures that various people include in their wardrobes. Shifts to warmer clothing and darker colors overwhelm social media and three main trends catch the eye of those on top of a trendy closet rotation.
Wine-red or burgundy-colored pieces
Adjusting in hand with the color change of leaves from vibrant green to yellows, reds and oranges, the color of the season takes its prominence in the fashion industry: burgundy. This deep shade of red perfectly embodies a rich and elegant hue, representing a visible depiction of the fall season. Spotted over the summer in various prestigious brand collections such as Gucci and Tom Ford, this wine-red color represents power and poise. This color can easily be incorporated into outfits in a variety of ways and patterns, leveling up any outfit.
“I think the dark red colors that are trending for this fall are perfect. It really shows the transition from a bright summer to chilly sweater-weather. The maroon is the perfect autumn color, and I will definitely be using it in my outfits for the upcoming months,” senior Abigail Burgess said.
Chunky sweaters and long skirts
Because fall marks a transitioning season characterized — in Georgia — by cold mornings and hot afternoons, several people find it hard to find an outfit that can cater to both temperatures. This mix between sophisticated and casual creates the perfect vibe for a winter and summer mix, combining tight and baggy elements. This trend also allows wearers to utilize fun-patterned skirts with a simple, loose sweatshirt or sweater, and show off unique pieces in their wardrobes.
Statement jackets featuring the timeless faux fur stands as another trend for this season. While brown remains the traditional coat color, and appears as the trendiest currently, the addition of a fur coat to a simple outfit can spice it up texture-wise. This oversized layer can fit perfectly on top of a slim sweater and tight pants combo to accentuate a daily look, or even pair over a simple black dress to create an exquisite evening attire.
“While I am not personally a fan of faux fur, I think it is a really great addition to outfits as we get closer to winter. Adding layers to keep you warm should definitely be a part of the outfit, and this is a great way to look cute and stay warm. The fur is really elegant especially over fancier clothes,” Burgess said.
On top of regular clothing trends, high schoolers across the world also hone their focus on homecoming dresses. These dresses tend to lean on the fancier side, but come with their own set of popular trends that students across the globe aim to follow.
Succeeding the 2023 coquette trend and incorporating newer ideas, homecoming dresses reflect the past year of micro-trends. Two dress trends in particular stand out.
Florals and casual evening dresses stole the hearts of dress-wearers over the summer and past year, causing a ripple in homecoming dress styles. Compared to the typical glitter and sequins students embezzle themselves in, these sundress-type homecoming dresses introduce florals and backless dresses with bows and lace to the party. This mix of dresses allows anyone to find a dress they feel comfortable in, and lowers the budget while homecoming dress shopping.
“I have noticed a lot of solids and less bling through this year’s homecoming trends. Also, a lot of draping across the bodice combined with off the shoulder. I chose a dress with draping across the bodice to go with our theme of Ancient Greece, but I quickly realized I chose one of the most trendy styles but with more bling,” senior Kaydence Malcom said.
Taking lead after the 2023 TikTok obsession with bows, ribbons and everything girly, the 2024 homecoming dress cycle features numerous bows and frilly embellishments. Dresses come with bows on the back and front, or even both, showing just how monumental the previous trend stood as. Whether the bow takes the face of the entire dress or appears in a small pattern across the dress, they can be found within various dress shops and online stores. Appealing to girly-girls and pink-lovers, this trend perfectly encapsulates the 2023 rage.
Trends will always change with new years and the switch in seasons, leading to difficulty when attempting to keep up with the latest fashion statements. New colors and patterns introduced into the fashion agenda bring up new clothing challenges or inspiration, pushing forward creative mindsets. Similarly, whether one strives towards an extravagant dress or comfortable attire, homecoming allows each individual to feel confident in themselves and enjoy a fun night in school spirit.
