Last week, the Warriors played the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs. NC won the annual Civil War Classic 38-14.

Varsity football took care of business and ensured themselves a home playoff game by virtue of a 38-14 victory over the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs on senior night this past Friday.

“We’ve had a great season but the real season starts next Friday against Valdosta,” Coach Shane Queen said.

With a more than 20 point lead in the fourth quarter, freshman and JV players were put in the game. Freshman Michael Dickson with the tackle in the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs, trailing 38-0 at halftime, scored twice in the second half, once on senior Brycen Colon’s pick six, against junior backup QB Trey Coryell and again on a 72-yard touchdown pass from senior QB Kyle Wooten to receiver Jack Ozmer.

The Warrior scoring outburst began with a nine-yard touchdown run in which senior receiver DJ Render lined up in the backfield, took the handoff and bounced to the outside, using his speed to beat Mustang defenders to the left pylon. The succeeding Warrior drive ended with a field goal, making the score 10-0.

Juniors Will Lovett (#7), Jai Erwin (#4), and Quannie Green (#3) before a play in the 2nd quarter. Lovett went on to score two touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, bringing the score to 38-0 at halftime.

Junior QB Will Lovett then took over the game, throwing two touchdown passes, one a screen to junior receiver Drew Tejchman, and the other a check-down pass to junior running back CJ Cole, which he took 20 yards to the house. Lovett then rushed for two touchdowns, both coming in the second quarter, of 19 and 20 yards, respectively, to give the Warriors an insurmountable 38-0 halftime lead.

Senior cornerback Gilbert Blow opted to ditch his #2 jersey to honor linebacker senior Cale Reid, who tore his ACL earlier in the year and could not play on senior night. Blow sported Reid’s #5 jersey and played well, not allowing any catches.

“That’s every coach’s dream right there,” Coach Queen said. “That’s how you know you’re doing something right.”

Reid, overcome with emotion, said it “meant the world” to him.

The Warriors host the Valdosta Wildcats in the first round of the state playoffs on Friday, November 13th. The two’s last meeting came in the opening round of the 2012 playoffs, a game the Warriors won and rode all the way to the Final Four. Will history repeat itself?
