Monday, March 3, the NC varsity boys lacrosse Warriors (6-0) played against the Midtown High School Knights (3-1) at home and took their win for the sixth time in a row. The Warriors continue their winning streak after last night’s game, proving their spot in the state playoffs later on in the season.
“Our coach prepares us very well for each game. Whether it is through film or specific drills for a team that we play, they [the Knights] are a strong team so it was good to get a win against them,” senior defensive player Cooper Negron (22) said.
Staring off the frigid, nighttime game, the first quarter began with a bang for the Warriors. After a series of back-and-forth passes between players and a timeout called by Midtown to regroup only four minutes in, the Warriors scored back-to-back goals. Senior midfielder Andrew Lapierre (15) scored NC two goals nearly a minute apart and sophomore midfielder Luke Winter (14) earned the team another point. Magnet senior attacker Carter Sams (16) and senior attacker Zach Afalla (3) ended the quarter with two additional goals, ending with a score of 5-0.
After a quick break, NC players felt the rush of energy from their lead in the game, encouraging them to continue playing with determination to finish strong. Quickly into the second quarter and after an impressive save from senior goalie Rashad Jefferson (6), NC Warriors attained two goals. Lapierre swept himself back into the game and ended the quarter with an 8-0 score, leaving the Warriors ahead of their opponents.
With the drop in temperature, fans took halftime to warm up with hot cocoa as team players huddled up and thought out their game plan for the rest of the night in hopes of taking home the win.
Heading into the third quarter, the Warriors and Knights chased each other back and forth, throwing passes throughout the entirety of the quarter after Afalla scored NC another point. As the game reached the end, players from both teams grew tired after a competitive match. During the midst of the fourth quarter, the Knights unfortunately gained a point for their team, scoring their one, and only, goal.
As the clock struck zero, the Warriors and Knights capped off the night with a friendly goodbye and an ultimate NC win. The Warriors scored another win for their 2025 season record, allowing them to move closer to reaching state playoffs.
“It felt great to have such a hot start and hopefully it carries over for the rest of the year. It is always nice to see my teammates score because those are my brothers and when they score, we all score. I am looking forward to our playoff and what we will do in the postseason,” Negron said.
