The NC girls varsity soccer team (3-0) opened the season with confidence, earning a 3-0 shutout victory in its first scrimmage against Kell High School Friday, February 6. The starting lineup incorporated a blend of captains, returning varsity players and incoming varsity players, allowing the team to start strong, establishing chemistry early on in the season.
Upon kickoff, NC’s Lady Warriors set the pace and control early, utilizing strategic passing and teamwork to keep the ball in their half. While freshman strikers Aleena Minott (6) and Charlee Bridges (2) remained central at the top of the box, magnet senior captain Logan Kirkland (22), magnet junior left-back Ellie Shields (12) and junior center-back London Roby (14) anchored the back line. By settling long outward passes by Kell, NC’s defensive structure efficiently limited the Longhorns’ chances of moving toward their half. This strategy allowed the team to reset play and transition forward for further goal-scoring opportunities.
“I think the game went very well for it being our first game back. I remember the moment I stepped onto the field and how happy I felt to be playing my first high school game. It felt amazing to score not just for myself, but for my team,” freshman striker Charlee Bridges (2) said.
Bridges, later designated “player of the game,” capitalized on two scoring opportunities on the pitch. Finishing both goals off of passes from teammates with a quick turn and shot, Bridges set the tone offensively and pressured Kell’s defensive line. Despite controlling possession for the majority of the game, Coach Christina Wilson identified areas for the team to improve at halftime. She focused on encouraging the team to tighten up the midfield and play deliberately in this area to relieve any extensive pressure on NC’s back line.
“It was [gameplay] a little sloppy at times around the midfield, but this game helped us learn how each of us plays under pressure. Now we can work around that and build chemistry with each other. Personally, I was extremely nervous at the beginning because it was my first high school game in two years. But when I scored, all of that went away. I was so excited. I think this game gives us hope as a team for the upcoming season,” senior center-mid Mayra Valera (5) said.
With a strategic and composed performance from defense, intense attacking structure and a tightened midfield, NC’s opening scrimmage proved an exemplary display of teamwork. The match allowed the Lady Warriors to build, learn and lead through trial and error, creating authentic chemistry that the team can use to carry them through the season. If such a high level of connection continues to develop, the NC Lady Warriors will position themselves to compete intensely this upcoming season.
