April 14, the NC Warrior varsity boys (5-11) and girls (2-13) soccer teams faced the Allatoona High School Buccaneers boys (8-8) and girls (12-3) teams, ready to fight passionately to honor the class of 2026 seniors in their last home game of the season. Throughout their time on the team, the NC senior athletes worked to build lasting bonds with their teammates and strived to gain skills that will stay with them throughout their collegiate journeys and the rest of their lives. Although both NC teams fell short against the Buccaneers, the Warriors maintained impressive effort during the games, displaying the teamwork they developed throughout the season.
To start the evening, the boys warmed up for the 6:00 p.m. match while encouraging each other and reviewing plays. The NC boys’ match kicked off with all of the seniors starting. Both teams maintained a strong defense to prevent either team from scoring. Impressively, the Warriors stood tall in preventing a goal off an Allatoona free kick. Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Gossmann (1) held off a possible Buccaneer goal using his incredible speed and reaction time. Despite Gossmann’s efforts, Allatoona scored in the first half at the 16:45 mark. During halftime, senior captain forward Hamed Lemboye (9) gathered his team to encourage them to continue their perseverance and work in harmony.
The Warriors played down 0-1 after halftime, with NC blocking multiple Allatoona shot attempts. NC left the half with fire and determination to stop the Buccaneers from scoring again. On the sideline, magnet sophomore center back Patrick Esuzor (3) warmed up to enter the game. Esuzor’s offensive efforts pushed the Warriors closer to the goal; however, they faced the staunch Buccaneer defense yet again. Allatoona scored again at the 33:30 mark following a tough contest at the goal. The Warriors continued to push and attempted to score on the Allatoona defense. Ultimately, the Buccaneers scored an additional two times prior to the end of the game.
Following the conclusion of the game, the seniors joined their families to enjoy their final moments at Emory-Sewell Stadium. Parents set up balloon accessories that read “2026” on them for seniors to pose with for photos. While walking down the field with people they love, an announcer read the seniors’ plans and their advice to underclassmen. Plans for the future include college studies, the workforce and both collegiate and professional soccer. Coach Buttram and Coach Wilson posed with the seniors and their families after handing them a gift bag and their posters. Emotions ran high as each senior heard their name called. Teammates and friends cheered loudly for their seniors along with a packed crowd of other parents and students.
“I’m pretty sad that the seniors are leaving. I’m going to miss the environment because they were so welcoming my freshman year. I will remember how a lot of them put their trust in me without really seeing me play, and once they did, our team bonded even better. I feel like their absence is going to be felt next year because we are going to miss their leadership,” Esuzor said.
After the senior festivities, a 10-minute countdown started that allowed the NC Lady Warriors to warm up and prepare for their match against the Buccaneers. During this time, the four senior captains, midfielder Mayra Valera-Meza (5), defender Logan Kirkland (22), midfielder Isabel Sierra (21) and outside back Stephanie Fuentes-Cortes (10), led numerous passing and shooting drills that helped to prepare the Warriors to face the back-to -back region champions. When the buzzer sounded, the teams quickly huddled up with their coaches to discuss final strategies before the announcers began to declare the starting lineup.
The second match of the night kicked off, and the Warriors felt ready to fight for their seniors, but the Buccaneers started the game ready for a victory. Although the Warriors held a strong defense and junior goalkeeper Areya Jackson (1) saved numerous goals, the Buccaneers managed to gain a comfortable lead in the first 10 minutes, setting the score 0-2. This initial score inspired the Warriors to stiffen their defense and midfield, and forced the ball to remain on the Buccaneers’ side of the field. The Warriors kept fighting and attempted shots at the goal, but the Buccaneers goalkeeper showcased her skills to keep the Warriors from scoring.
Three minutes before halftime, the Lady Warriors grew tired, allowing the Buccaneers to sneak in a goal and bring the score to 0-3. Instead of merely folding at the end of the half, the NC Warriors utilized their kickoff to bring the ball up the field to the Buccaneers’ goal. With 20 seconds remaining in the first half, Fuentes-Cortes smashed the ball into the opposing net, scoring the first goal against the Buccaneers. The first half concluded with the score showing 1-3 and left both teams with discussion during the 10-minute halftime.
Both the Lady Warriors and Buccaneers returned back to the field for the second half reenergized and ready to finish off the match. The half turned into a physical battle filled with frequent fouls, penalties and even a yellow card against the Buccaneers. Despite this, the Warriors continued their effort to maintain the score and hold their ground. The Buccaneers landed the ball in the back of the net again with 15 minutes remaining, closing out the game with a final score of 1-4.
While the scoreboard failed to reflect the outcome the NC Warriors desired, the night showed the perseverance, growth and lasting impact of the senior class on the NC soccer program. Both teams demonstrated the skills they built throughout the season, honoring their seniors not just through their plays on the field, but through the bonds and leadership evident in every move. As the Warriors look forward, the lessons and legacy from the class of 2026 will continue to shape the program in the following years.
The Chant wishes the NC soccer seniors luck in their future endeavors.
