As underclassmen approach the high school finish line and conclude the 2022-2023 school year, they must consider how to spend their summers. Although no perfect answer exists, an ideal way to spend a summer varies based on future goals and post-high school plans. From learning a new language to working as a lifeguard, NC students ultimately spend their summers in ways that provide enjoyment and provide the experience needed for college applications.

Colleges encourage underprivileged and first-generation students to apply because they want the school to stand prominent in diversity. Unfortunately, colleges fail to sympathize with the significant disadvantage placed on certain students and reject them. If the students receive an acceptance and attend college, they yet again stand at a disadvantage among their counterparts. Because first-generation students’ parents typically earn less due to lacking higher education, first-generation students bear the stressful financial burden of college as well as the stress to prove themselves to their parents.

As May 1 approaches, NC seniors who applied in the early action and regular decision windows will celebrate National Decision Day by publicly announcing their college decisions. During their four years of high school, the seniors worked to receive acceptance letters into their desired colleges. Although, such a choice does not come without hardship. Juniors and seniors must determine which factors take importance when applying to and deciding on their future college.

People abstain from attending college due to the cost, but people do not know that a majority of jobs now require a bachelors degree. By avoiding college, they can encounter stress due to not knowing what to do in life; attending college helps students find their passion and learn more about what they want to do in life. It also helps build skills in different fields and teaches students life skills.

Student loans continue to rise in cost without income increasing. Student debt delays the dreams of a handful of graduates; this slows down their passion to accomplish the dreams they desire. The United States, one of the countries who puts thousands of people in debt, strives to raise their prices. This feeling harms their ways of thinking, although it ends up not being as important as people perceive it. As life continues, students come to the realization they do not need to make a permanent decision at a young age, and they can explore their interests after high school and through college.

The SAT/ACT should determine, among other factors, a student’s eligibility to enter college. However, this can only work if they design the exam fairly and if everyone can take the exam. Sat/ACT should not determine one’s own eligibility to enter college; extracurriculars, GPA and grade should determine it. “Yes, I think it should be optional, it should be a facet that colleges look for, it could be a piece of who a student is overall. It definitely should not be the only piece that should be looked at, for a very long time it has been GPA and SAT score and if you didn’t have them, then you couldn’t get in. I like the idea that it is a piece so if a kid does well they could add it to their portfolio,” SAT/ACT proctor Jennifer Morgan said.

The process of applying for college has increased with intensity in the past year. While the relief from acceptance letters and the conclusion from rejections make students feel satisfied, students receiving waitlist decisions from schools can not relate. Stuck in limbo due to the ever-changing holistic viewing processes and the influx in competition, current applications to colleges lean much towards more confusing and stressful emotions.

After a chaotic two years, the senior class of 2022 finally reunited in person for their final year of high school. The students will all look back on their high school years fondly and reminisce on the great memories that NC provided. “One of my favorite memories from school is having classroom debates and discussions with some of my favorite teachers. I loved hearing everyones opinions and being able to make connections with other students,” senior Maddy Nomura said.

If students cannot attend their desired school, they can attend a different college first, then transfer later in their college career. For example, Georgia Technical Institute (Georgia Tech) accepted just below 40% and 20% of Georgian and non-Georgian applicants respectively in 2020. On the other hand, the college accepted 53% of Georgia resident transfers and 31% of non-Georgia residents. So an option exists where one could attend Kennesaw State University (KSU) at first, then transfer into Georgia Tech later on.
