The anticipation of Friday Night Lights rang loudly as the NC Lady Warrior varsity soccer team (11-1) arrived at Etowah High School’s stadium March 27 for a fierce matchup against the Etowah Eagles (9-4). Both teams felt the pressure, as this match counted toward their region standing; for the Warriors, this game would determine whether the team’s dreams of qualifying for the playoffs held any possibility. Sadly, by the final whistle, the Eagles defeated NC in an unfortunate score of 4-0, crushing the Warriors’ hopes of the playoffs.
“I think [the second half] was a reality check, and we noticed we were still in the game. Especially because Etowah went a while without scoring, but in the first half, it was really easy to get discouraged and unmotivated since they scored four goals quickly. As a whole, [the team] hasn’t at all reached full potential, and it’s difficult to be too satisfied when [the team is] not the best possible version,” magnet freshman striker Aleena Minott (6) said.
Starting the game, the Warriors set up in a 3-5-2 with hopes of overloading the midfield to shut down Etowah’s attack; with a back pass from freshman midfielder Charlee Bridges (2), the game kicked off. While Etowah’s midfield quickly won the ball from NC, the back line fought hard; however, Etowah’s left winger shut down NC’s efforts and secured a corner kick. As all the attacking players set up, the Lady Warriors moved quickly onto their backs to defend any possible attempts close to the goal. NC deflected the corner kick away from the Eagles, yet the ball landed out of bounds, allowing Etowah to take another corner kick. Only this time, Etowah successfully scored on a front-post run after ditching a player in the heat of the box. As the team slowly fell discouraged, their captains, specifically senior outside back Stephanie Fuentes-Cortes (10), reluctantly sent words of encouragement to uplift and refocus the team on the match. NC retrieved the ball and set back up to restart the offense once again, but similar to the last kick-off, NC lost possession of the ball. As the Eagles ran toward the Warriors’ goal, NC’s backline advanced with the attackers, shutting down any goal attempts. The Warriors’ defense fought with unwavering effort, while certain defensive attempts fell short, the back line remained engaged in blocking any other goal attempts. NC junior goalie, Analia Palafox (4) set up her players to defend before Etowah launched another corner kick into the box. Both teams fought to land a foot on the ball, with NC trying to kick the ball out and the other side attempting to score. With a drop pass back to an Eagle player, she sent off a shot, securing Etowah’s second goal of the night, only a few minutes into the first half.
Despite NC’s efforts, they played down 2-0 soon after the game began, leading the home team to doubt themselves and their skills. After the post-goal kickoff, the Eagles gained possession again and drove toward the goal. Similar to last time, NC blocked any straight goal attempts, providing Etowah with another corner kick. As the players lined up, the Warriors showed determination to block any possible goal-scoring opportunities — while they deflected the ball away from the goal, it landed perfectly for an Etowah player to take a successful shot. NC gathered the ball back, determined to keep Etowah from scoring again. NC began to possess the ball, passing around and between the Eagle players, displaying NC’s strong chemistry. By the end of the first half, Etowah scored four goals, compared to zero from NC’s offense.
“When the first goal got let in, I think we were all just in our heads thinking we were gonna fail. In the second half, we really got our confidence back after Coach talked to us, so our performance improved. It really sucks that we didn’t make it to the playoffs for our seniors, and I knew they really wanted to make it to the playoffs as well, but hopefully next year we will have a better chance,” freshman midfielder Bridgit Jimnah (18) said.
After a fiery halftime meeting amongst NC, the girls stepped onto the field with a new attitude and excitement for the game. The Warriors pressed Etowah’s offense quickly, providing them with multiple goal-scoring chances; unfortunately, NC could not capitalize on their chances. As the Warriors stepped up their overall play, the Eagles fought hard in attempts to score again, but the NC defense refused any goal opportunities from Etowah. By the final whistle, Etowah had defeated NC in an unfortunate score of 4-0, ridding the Warriors of any playoff hopes they once held. While NC lacks the chance to move on to the playoffs, they continue to strive through the season, excitedly anticipating their next match against the Marietta Blue Devils April 2.
