For over eleven years, the Baker Elementary School chorus sings their way into the hearts of patrons at the Big Shanty Festival. This year, director Fonda Riley directed students on stage as they sang five songs. “At first, I was a bit scared, well, nervous, and I was honestly excited too because I had a solo. I couldn’t wait to perform in front of all those people,” Baker Elementary fourth-grader Zoë Zavala said.

The Acworth Art Fest took place between April 6 and 7. The event offered a common ground for artists and creators to present their work. Art Fest participant Hannah Coker displayed 13 pieces of her work in hopes to meet new people and sell her products.

Their positions near the top of the list of schools applied to by NC students make UGA and UNG ideal places for students to visit during their time on the Peach Tour. “We chose North Georgia and UGA because they’re close in [the] vicinity and we can get there with no problems. We have a great ROTC program here. North Georgia has an ROTC program that students always look at, and UGA is one of the top schools that students tend to apply to. The students that are interested can see the nature of both [schools],” Aldridge said.

NC juniors Laney Robitzsch and Tatiana Londoño smile after receiving their bronze medals from attaining the 9th position at the annual FCCLA state competition. Sophomore Kiara Kisor, the original team member, could not savor this moment with her partner due to health issues but despite all odds, the students’ determination to win a medal earned them a bronze medal, which they now wear with pride.

After three days at LGPE, the NC Band continues to hone their musical skills by practicing new music with Director Pannell (seen in red shirt). Though LGPE already came and went, the NC Band still plans to continue with their work; most notably, the band will perform at the Heritage Festival this Friday & Saturday, an event that will see bands and choral groups from across the nation perform in the PAC, and then tour Atlanta.

These bibliomaniacs’ weekends are fully booked! Cobb County sprung into the spring season as they kicked off their semi-annual book sale on March 15, 16, and 17. The sale’s commencement attracted bookworms of all ages through its wide array of book selections. The event, held at the Cobb County Civic center, took place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Shoppers excitedly entered the center with reusable bags and boxes, ready to fill them up with new tales. The building held a plethora of books, taking up spaces on the first and second floors. The alphabetically organized books made shopping manageable as bookworms scavenged through their favorite authors. “[The Book Sale is] more than a large venue full of books and bargain hunters from the Cobb community and far beyond, the Book Sale brings people together with a tremendous sense of community spirit and unity,” Cobb Library Director Helen Poyer said. Beyond the books, the building also held magazines, VHSs, CDs, and records. The affordable prices compelled patrons to fill their boxes to the rim and pack their cars full. “I enjoy how excited everyone is to come in and find books and media. It gives our patrons [a] way to find homes for their books and donate to us [as] they are repurchased. We also have a place to send dated library books which are no longer relevant in our collections. It is a win for all of us. A lot of homeschool families get basic supplies for their children at these sales,” program coordinator Patty Latch said. The event depleted the building of its media, and through incorporating various deals, sent shoppers off with new adventure-filled companions. In addition to leaving the event with cases of books, shoppers left knowing that their purchases will contribute to the libraries of the Cobb County Public Library System and will place books into the hands of those awaiting knowledge. The diligent staff worked hard in providing books to those in need. The Cobb County Library system looks forward to the upcoming fall book sale as they promote education among all ages.

apanese exchange students from Kochi Minami High School visited NC’s Japanese language class. Families hosted the exchange students in their homes for one week, showing them around NC and Atlanta. As the exciting week came to a sad end, all students who participated will never forget the everlasting friendships and memories made on the trip.

Students received notes from North Star Admin regarding NC students’ privilege of parking on the church’s campus. The administration discontinued providing their parking lot for students who did not purchase a parking pass. Students keep hopes high for North Star reopening their church lot for students in the upcoming semester.

Over this past weekend, the NC varsity winter guard and Cadets teams performed for the second time since January. With a new coach came unexpected twists and turns and a different style of work; however, the team adjusted to the change seamlessly and will continue to strive for greatness.

The NC-Harrison JROTC team basks in the glory of their achievements at the Area 12 Championship event. Held once every year at the start of March, this event evaluates all the ROTC groups in the Cobb region and beyond for various military skills, including general and advanced knowledge on military history, as well as the intricacies of military marches.

As a requirement for their freshman curriculum, all ninth grade magnet students must take AP Human Geography, a course taught primarily by James Auld. “Historically, we have about anywhere from 95 to 100 percent of students [sign up for exams]. This year we have 83 out of 88 [students]. We still have to finish two whole units. Then they do a group collaborative study project outside of school that goes in as a comprehensive exam grade, and then we have after-school sessions for anyone and everyone that would like to come. So between those two, they have twelve different opportunities,” Auld said. In addition to attending various study sessions and using the college prep and information books pictured above to ready themselves for their upcoming exams, students may also look to self-help books like Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, for guidance. This influential book explains the secret to accessing the deepest facets of human potential, offering a fuller, more complex definition of success.
