Nicolas Gomez, Reporter

Nicolas Gomez is a freshman at NC. Being new to The Chant’s staff this semester, Nicolas plans to stay for all of high school. He loves to read, binge American Horror Story, and enjoy some of his favorite artists, like The Weeknd or Kali Uchis. 

One of his main commitments at school is marching band, as a member of the Warrior Band’s front ensemble. One of his wishes is to make it to the NC Wind Symphony. He plans to major in Music at UGA.

Jaden Bruton, a lesbian sophomore at NC, experiences hate at school and in public. On her first public date with a girl, strangers called them slurs. Being queer for her at NC has not been terrible, despite two main occurrences where people have become very negative about her sexuality. With this being only one example of prejudice, more untold stories where students become discriminated against will come up. Suffering for far too long, the queer community does anything within their power to stop the hate, taking to social media, peacefully protesting, and using everything they can to stop the unfair treatment.

Jennifer Leslie, Jonny Owens and Sydney Hilliard led the success of the winter guard team this past season. Several of the members of the team will march this fall in order to continue their high school careers with the color guard team. Seniors who exemplified the qualities that directors expected of their members left the team because their high school careers came to an end. The guard’s past section leader, Payton Norris and other alumni such as Miche Hines kept the team strong and displayed an example for the underclassmen to look up to.

Starting off Senior week, participating seniors dress up as kindergartners, including Alanna Gill and Kaitlyn Carson, sporting pigtails and colorful outfits. The day’s meaning: to reminisce on childhood memories before finishing their school career, marks the beginning of a bitter sweet send off. “I am so excited for the rest of Senior Week and everything that it has in store for the class of 2022. I believe that future NC seniors will gracefully carry on this tradition of Warrior Pride and school spirit,” senior Kaitlyn Carson said.

Fans all around the world loved Alice Oseman’s writing and they praised her assistance with the series. One of the main contributions to the live-action adaptation became the soundtrack featured within the show. Tracks from artists like Orla Gartland, Baby Queen, and Girl in Red featured in the hit series, skyrocketing the artists' careers much further. They all now keep their own expanded loyal fan bases because of the attraction the series pertained.

Fanbases hold a huge part in any artist's career, from Taylor Swift’s “Swifties” and Lady Gaga’s “Monsters,” to even Rina’s “Pixels”. Charli XCX keeps her own, naming them her “Angels”. They support all of her albums, singles, and EPs, gaining her Billboard, NME and YouTube Music awards. While changing her tune, the fans stick with their favorite star to support the music, making sure the album gets the attention they believe it deserves.

With new anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the country shocking the community, people become determined to “say gay”, doing everything they can to bring awareness to the hate they suffer. A majority of social media influencers fight against hate. Major companies are constantly under fire by these influencers, like Disney, because they don't fully condemn the laws, yet wish to remain inclusive in their staffing and filmmaking. Another example of a big name that cripples her own trustworthiness, award-winning JK Rowling, the famous writer of Harry Potter, has shared her unpopular opinion of trans people as a whole.

The movie has maintained inclusivity in its voice actors, utilizing Asians that maintain titles for themselves in live-action shows. The film contained Asian culture and mixed with it the standards of a parent’s ideal child. “I like this movie for the introduction it did of tough topics that Pixar doesn’t usually mention, like puberty and the difficulties even young kids go through with their parents' strict expectations. It's very difficult, and I like how the movie keeps up with how the world is working in these times,” freshman Kristy Gonzalez said.

Varsity and JV baseball continues their 2022 season going into spring with their first game after break. The first varsity game of the season resulted in a 11-3 win against the Sprayberry Yellow Jackets, and both the boys and girls teams have many victories under their belt. Varsity will compete against the Hillgrove Hawks here at NC, while the JV team will play in Powder Springs against the JV Hawks.

With excitement, NC’s astronomy club will board the new Apollo 11, with neighboring schools accompanying them. The whole project, fronted by the Space Force, will remain in the textbooks for its monumental effect. “I’m super excited for the whole team, whether from Space Force or NASA, it was really just a team effort from everyone involved. I was brought into this barely last year, and I already have such a tight bond with everyone around me. I can't wait to see how this will go,” freshman Jacob Wilkins said.

The cafeteria staff kicked off spring with new easter decorations, giving a fresh look to the room. Many students awaited spring, because spring means school is almost done. Spring usually brings the more difficult parts of some students' time here, with finals happening, and the end of the seniors high school career. “Spring is nice, I like the sunnier days it offers, but it does get pretty humid. This is my last spring in school, and that can be stressful with the graduation ceremony and finals too, but I’ll get through it,” senior Jonelvis Lopez Rodriguez said.

To sustain focus, a core element in all activities, and to perform a show and maintain that balance of concentration and performance can prove difficult. NC’s winter guard team demonstrated this aspect of winter guard last Saturday, by knowing what they do, and also showing it to the audience. “[I’m] looking forward to more fun experiences and great dancing. There is always a struggle in every problem we face but as a team, we are able to make it through and become very good leaders and companions towards each other,” junior Natalie Romero said.

The NC varsity soccer teams played their tenth game of the season against the Marietta Blue Devils Friday, March 4 with the girls winning (6-1) and the boys losing (1-7). The girls displayed impressive cooperation amongst themselves and demonstrated their talent on the field. Playing her last season on the team, Columbus State University commit Kenna Armitage (#11) savored her time on the field. “We’ll be missing her, for sure. She’s a really nice person, and we wish her the best going on in soccer and life in general. I can say that Kenna maintained a level of positivity that the team needed,” freshman Mackenzie Johnson (#21) said.

This ditch behind the track at North Cobb High school remains filled with trash. Wrappers from food products such as Ritz crackers, cinnamon buns, as well as Welch’s fruit snacks, lie on the ground. North Cobb’s very own Beta Club does their part in trying to better our environment as they participate in cleaning up parts of their school. While this remains a much-appreciated effort, the more students involved can help the schools' environment become cleaner would be a fantastic goal for NC as a whole. As students and staff may litter around the school premises, janitors work hard to keep the school environment safe and clean for all.

The Cobb county music department runs everything music for the county. That would include The Cobb Exhibition, a show for all marching bands invited. On the other hand, the LGPE event evaluates concert bands, to assure that students learn the proper curriculum in the classroom. The content learned there, applied to any musical event the band attends, will further their knowledge on music.

With her four projects, Lorde has continued to keep on living, and fans cannot wait to see more from her in the future. Even with her not releasing music, anyone can enjoy the music of the past, from “The Love Club” to the new album “Solar Power”. She continues to create a feeling of care for her fans, having them reminisce on past memories. “Well, I just have to go and live my life so that I have stuff to write about. it's just sort of mooching and taking time,” Lorde said.

The Eco Warriors of NC run a booth in the cafeteria this valentine’s day, selling one dollar frosted cookies as an environmental fundraiser, with the intent to donate all proceeds. As a new club at NC, the young club promotes recycling, advocating for the maintenance of our planet. This is the first time that the organization hosted a fundraiser directed towards students, and it’ll probably be something NC will see more from them. Eco Warriors builds on student involvement not only just as extracurriculars, but by joining in on what they’re passionate about.
