High school and college students alike raise concerns about the test’s fairness, leading to approximately 1,843 colleges disregarding SAT scores in student application processes.

The SAT/ACT should determine, among other factors, a student’s eligibility to enter college. However, this can only work if they design the exam fairly and if everyone can take the exam. Sat/ACT should not determine one’s own eligibility to enter college; extracurriculars, GPA and grade should determine it. “Yes, I think it should be optional, it should be a facet that colleges look for, it could be a piece of who a student is overall. It definitely should not be the only piece that should be looked at, for a very long time it has been GPA and SAT score and if you didn’t have them, then you couldn’t get in. I like the idea that it is a piece so if a kid does well they could add it to their portfolio,” SAT/ACT proctor Jennifer Morgan said.

Students see preparing for and taking the SAT or ACT as a staple of one’s high school experience. Colleges use these exam scores and a student’s grade point average to help determine whether or not to accept them. For this reason, educators advise students not to put all of their eggs in one basket when it comes to applying for colleges with a not-so-great SAT/ACT score. “If we’re talking about Harvard or Stanford, they’re going to want a 1500+ on your SAT and a 35+ on your ACT. If you know that that’s the score you need to get, and you don’t get that, then you should probably apply to other schools… Open the door of opportunity and apply to multiple schools. Don’t just isolate yourself to one or two particular schools.” Mai Jumamil, Director of College Prep Programs at Kaplan Test Prep, said.

Hundreds of students in NC sat down today to take the PSAT/NMSQT test on Wednesday, October 3. NC sophomores registered for the test free of charge. However, freshmen who wanted to take the PSAT/NMSQT needed to pay an $18 fee. While also receiving practice for the SAT, students who score well enough on the PSAT may receive the National Merit Scholarship (NMSQT).

NC and The Learning Island team up to prepare students SAT and ACT spring semester. Classes occur from 3:45-5:45 on Mondays and Wednesdays for the SAT, and at the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All classes take place at NC with a registration fee of $399.
