Merced plays softball to relieve stress from her lofty career aspirations.

Senior Sarah Merced, a scholar athlete, envisions a successful college experience and career as a doctor.

“I’ve always enjoyed helping people, especially children. When I combine that passion with my interest in the medical field, becoming a pediatrician seems obvious, Merced said.

This ambitious student finds herself eager to graduate soon and continue her education in college. Merced chose to expand her education at Lee University, a private Christian college in Cleveland, Tennessee. Her decision came shortly after receiving a full athletic scholarship to play softball at Lee. Merced hopes college will present her a positive educational opportunity and help to expand her faith.

“I’m excited about college but also nervous. I can’t wait to become independent from my parents and meet new people. Everyone at Lee has been very welcoming to me on my visits. Hopefully I can make an easy transition in the fall,” Merced said.

Merced aims to attend graduate school after finishing college. She acknowledges the extensive schooling and studying required to become a doctor, but believes she possesses enough drive to serve as a pediatrician. Merced’s enthusiasm remains apparent, and she hopes her position in the magnet program will assist her in college preparation.

“As a friend, I’m really proud of what Sarah has accomplished in high school. Anyone that knows her can see her dedication. It’s really unique. I look up to her because she never settles and always strives for the best. Sarah will do great in college and as a doctor,” senior Darien Jones said.

Although Merced wishes to work as a pediatrician in the future, she also finds interest in physical therapy. Throughout her athletic career, Merced suffered many injuries, which required rehabilitation. These occurrences make her a good candidate for specialization in sports medicine.

“Sarah is one of the most committed players I’ve ever coached. Her love for softball is obvious and clear to others. She has improved greatly throughout the last four years in sports and academics. Sarah has a lot of potential,” Coach Turchan said.

Merced remains a prominent member of the community. She performs in the NC chorus and participates as an avid member of her Church’s youth group. Merced promises achievement in college, leading her to the ultimate goal to become a doctor.
