Warriors trample Blue Devils in blowout game
March 22, 2021
Following the disappointing loss to the Harrison Hoyas on March 16, the NC varsity Warriors (6-9) eagerly anticipated their second game of region play to prove themselves. The Warriors went up against the Marietta Blue Devils (8-6) on March 18, which featured both teams fiercely competing and showcasing advanced play. NC battled cold and damp weather conditions but ultimately walked away with a 6-1 victory.
The game started with junior outfielder Ashton Bostwick earning a run for the Warriors, bringing the score to 1-0. The successful trend continued with sophomore shortstop Kyle Robitzsch and senior catcher Harry Ford scoring two more runs. Excited fans watched as the Warriors maintained their drastic lead for the rest of the game. Senior starting pitcher Trevor Lovett barely allowed any Blue Devils to reach first base, and pitched impressively the entire night.
“We had solid approaches at the plate and put the ball in smart places. We made their defense work, and tried to set our tempo. Our team has started to work more as a unit rather than everyone trying to do everything by themselves,” junior second baseman Logan Bare said.
After Bare’s run in the top of the fourth inning, both teams exhibited impressive defensive techniques and prevented each other from gaining a run until the top of the sixth inning when freshman infielder Jay Abernathy found his way to home plate off of a hit from Bostwick. The Blue Devils retaliated by gaining a run off of a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting their first points on the scoreboard.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Warriors took vengeance with Bare adding a run off of an impressive hit from junior third baseman Sammy Rose. Following the incredible hit, Rose and junior first baseman Robert Boughner exhibited stellar defensive plays before both teams decided to call a mercy rule and end the game early.
With a final score of 6-1, the Warriors demonstrated spectacular offensive play, while combating the Blue Devils with effective defensive strategy. The Warriors anticipate another win against the Hillgrove Hawks on March 23 at the Hawk field.
