In response to the opinion piece “Rape preventing nail polish misses point”
November 7, 2014
To the editor of The Chant,
This is a response to the opinion piece “Rape preventing nail polish misses the point and encourages conforming to rape culture,” originally published September 12, 2014.
Let’s all agree–rape is a terrible thing. It is a heinous act that can scar a victim for the rest of their lives. Almost anyone you ask will tell you the same thing. So to say that we are a “rape culture” that romanticizes–or worse, condones rape is quite the overstatement.
Teaching men to rape is the wrong approach. You can do it all you want, but at the end of the day, there are always some disgusting people out there. If rapists were sensible people, there would be no rapists. To take away women’s protection is vile.
This nail polish is quite similar to an alarm system on a house. Both of their jobs are to protect the subject from criminals. Of course, it would be nice if they weren’t necessary. Unfortunately, there are terrible people that make it necessary. There always will be, with the exception of your fantasy imaginary world.

Dear Alicia Bush,
Isn’t it sad how us girls and women can’t live life without fear? That every time we go out day or night we have to watch our backs. That us females can’t live like the males because of many life-threatening reasons. In all honesty, I’m proud of our society that we have come to a solution to one of our biggest problems in women’s society. The fear is now gone, ladies. One of our fears can be stopped, and this fear is massive. “Date rape solution: the nail polish that can change and save a life.” It puts a bad person behind bars, and one less person to put us in fear. The polish is pink, and you put it in your drink and will turn black within seconds to show danger. The end to fear and to a new beginning.

Dear Alicia Bush,
“These are our daughters, they are our girlfriends, and they are our friends.” This article really touched me, and this quote really stuck with me! It is very important that people are helping prevent the occurrence of date rape. This situation is very serious especially because approximately 18% of American women will undergo sexual assault in their lives. I feel like this nail polish should be sold all over because rapists are everywhere! Thank you so much for your article informing about this new product.
From,
Tierra Addison

In response to Justin: Why are you putting the responsibility to stop rape on the most common victims? It is impossible to teach, as you put it, “disgusting people”, to not rape, but it certainly possible to educate boys on respect and to not praise their sexuality while shaming women’s. Your response is, on the whole, very rape-apologetic. Furthermore, have you even listened to what kinds of things regarding rape you can hear throughout the hallways of this school on a daily basis? Jokes, threats, you name it, it’s probably said.
Stop saying comments like, “They should protect themselves instead of expecting men not to.” The fact is your apologism is a direct result of rape culture. It’s not the victim’s responsibility to prevent the crime from being committed.
