The morning of August 4 started bright and early for the newest senior class as they shuffled onto NC’s lush football field around 6:30 a.m. for their Senior Sunrise. Unfortunately, sunny smiles shone under a sky full of rainy clouds, but nothing could conceal the excitement that buzzed through the air. With the promise of a fresh start to a final year, the class of 2026 celebrated with donuts, coffee and an abundance of friendship.
“Senior Sunrise was good. I loved getting together with my friends before the school year started officially. Seeing everyone dressed up was really fun as well since a lot of people had made senior jeans. I’m glad we made the most out of the rainy morning,” magnet senior Mia Goldbach said.
Rolling into the decorated school parking lot Monday, seniors reunited with their friends after a brisk summer break. As they piled into Emory Sewell Stadium, the students embraced and engaged in a complimentary sugary breakfast, consisting of Dunkin Donuts, and sipped on their beverage of choice. To follow traditions of the Senior Sunrise in the past, students wore white as instructed by Tribal Connections, the group that organized the event.
With the re-emergence of digital cameras, there proved no shock when an assortment of seniors posed for photos with their vintage cameras. With shining smiles and glowing hearts, the students posted on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to share their captured memories. These photos and videos will serve as reminders of their precious senior year and the number of liberating experiences they participated in at NC.
“I was super excited to go to senior sunrise with my friends because I haven’t seen a lot of them over the summer, so it was like one big reunion. It was nice that the student government bought donuts for everyone, and I think that made the experience better since it was rainy. I’m a little sad that we couldn’t actually see the sunrise, but I’m hopeful that they will reschedule so that we can actually have a meaningful celebration,” magnet senior Lena Gray said.
Senior Sunrise acts as an ambient beginning to the school year, paving the way for an abundance of senior-centered activities. These events include senior week, a solemn five-day dress-up opportunity for seniors to celebrate their college decisions and complete the year with unique costumes. Another opportunity presents itself through sports, where teams host a senior night to recognize the hard-working seniors who participated in helping the team advance throughout the season. To conclude the year, the seniors will gather for one last time and watch the sunset as the sun sets on their journey at NC.
The Chant wishes the class of 2026 luck and success with all their future endeavors.
